Ottawa, Canada Bank of Canada Full time

**Policy Analyst, Currency**
**Take a central role**
The Bank of Canada has a vision to be “a leading central bank—dynamic, engaged and trusted—committed to a better Canada.” No other employer in the country offers you the unique opportunity to work at the very center of Canada’s economy, in a diverse and inclusive organization with significant impact on the economic and financial well-being of all Canadians. You will be challenged, energized and motivated to excel in an environment where we are reinventing central banking, renewing ways of doing business and reinforcing a culture of innovation.

Find out more about the next steps in our Recruitment process.

**Did you know?**
Many Canadians continue to use cash and few have plans to go cashless in the next five years. Although they have increasingly adopted online shopping and digital forms of payments, demand for cash in Canada increased through the pandemic from $83 billion to $100 billion by the end of 2020. 59 percent of Canadians reported that they used cash for transactions in the Bank’s November 2020 survey.

That said, the shares of volume and value of transactions made with cash continue to decline. Cash is used for 40% of low-value transactions and older, less-educated and low-income Canadians use cash for more of their transactions than other Canadians do. Changes in cash use and innovation in the payments ecosystem (including central bank digital currencies) are creating, or have the potential to create, challenges in the cash system including access to cash, acceptance of cash, quality and infrastructure efficiency. Canadians count on us to plan for the future of cash and continue to provide access to adequate supplies of secure bank notes they can use with confidence and pride.

**What you will do**
The Business Analysis and Policy Development (BAPD) team, within the Currency (CUR) department, is responsible for strategic business analysis and policy development to fulfill the Bank’s currency mandate. It monitors the currency and payments markets to understand trends and challenges, uses quantitative and qualitative evidence to rigorously analyze issues relating to the use of cash, proposes and recommends strategic and policy options to support achieving the mandate and promise to Canadians.

Reporting to the Director, you will:

- monitor and analyze trends and developments in currency and payments ecosystems, including potential legal issues concerning Currency legislation, to improve the quality and robustness of the team’s analysis function.
- identify and raise currency issues and the future of cash
develop relevant, strategic and thorough analysis, business cases and/or policy rationales and recommendations relating to cash, demonstrating a strong understanding of our public policy mandate and Currency business operations
**What you need to succeed**
You have expertise and experience in business and policy analysis and development, monitoring and analyzing relevant environments and policy issues. You can propose, coordinate and conduct in-depth analytical projects including the development of business cases, options and policy recommendations. You have strong qualitative and quantitative analysis and problem-solving skills.

You are self-motivated, capable of assessing evolving situations, define sometimes unstructured or ill-defined problems, conduct appropriate research, synthesize results to draw logical conclusions in a creative and innovative manner. You understand operational processes and can make recommendations to improve efficiency.

We are looking for an effective communicator, with the ability to produce high-quality briefing notes, presentations and other communication tools in order to capture input, build consensus and develop or present strong recommendations.

**Nice-to-have**
- Knowledge of the Currency function at the Bank.
- Knowledge of the payments ecosystem.
**Your education and experience**
