About Us
The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) is dedicated to safeguarding fire and building safety. Our core functions encompass developing essential policies and programs to uphold and enforce fire safety principles. We actively advise multiple levels of government on matters pertaining to fire protection, working closely with fire service partners throughout the province.
With a team of approximately 20 skilled professionals, our primary focus lies in supporting provincial and municipal partners in their efforts to achieve stringent building and fire safety standards.
About Our Opportunity
We're hiring a Data Administrator/Analyst who plays a key role in shaping fire safety initiatives across Nova Scotia. In this role, you'll develop and implement research and survey methodologies essential to advancing the Office of the Fire Marshal's (OFM) mission, helping ensure public safety and trust.
Your expertise in gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data from diverse sources will drive policy development, program evaluation, and strategic decision-making. By delivering accurate, evidence-based insights to senior leaders, you'll be instrumental in enhancing safety standards and bolstering the confidence of Nova Scotians in our fire protection efforts.
Primary Accountabilities
As the Data Administrator/ Analyst, you'll be instrumental in supporting fire safety initiatives through data-driven insights and analysis. A few key accountabilities include:
Developing research methodologies to collect and maintain accurate data from internal and external sources, ensuring it aligns with OFM priorities and legislative requirements.
Analyzing and reporting on data trends to guide policy development and address fire safety concerns.
Preparing detailed reports to support OFM business planning, program delivery, and quality assurance.
Ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and accessibility for regular and ad-hoc reporting.
Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to improve data quality and compliance with fire safety reporting standards.
Leading training sessions for fire departments and other partners to ensure accurate data submission and understanding of OFM requirements.
Implementing new data management tools and conducting training to enhance data collection and analysis across OFM initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
You have completed a related Bachelor's degree (such as Data Science, Statistics, Business Analytics, or Public Administration) and have at least three (3) years of related experience in data analysis, research methodologies, and reporting; or a completed related Master's degree and one (1) year of experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will also be considered.
**Essential qualities of yours include**:
experience in research, data collection, and analysis,
proficiency in managing data systems along with experience analyzing large datasets and preparing statistical reports for senior leaders and the public.
knowledge of research methodologies and survey design
excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex data insights clearly.
a keen eye for detail an ensuring accuracy and completeness in all data and reporting activities.
building strong working relationships with team members, community and external partners.
**Though not required, it is considered an asset if you have**:
Knowledge of the Fire Safety Act, Building Code Act, and related regulations and policies
Experience with SQL database management
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

A completed related diploma and five (5) years of experience
Seven (7) total years of related experience in data analysis
