Position Overview

The Director of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) provides strategic leadership and oversight of all health and safety programs across the organization. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal safety regulations while fostering a proactive safety culture aligned with our company values. Reporting to the VP of HR, the Director will lead a team of safety professionals across multiple sites to drive continuous improvement, risk reduction, and engagement in workplace safety.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute the company’s OHS strategy to align with corporate objectives and regulatory requirements.

Act as the company’s senior safety leader, providing expertise and guidance to executive leadership.
- Establish and monitor OHS performance metrics, goals, and reporting dashboards.
- Champion a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement across all sites.

Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure all company operations comply with provincial and federal OHS regulations (WorkSafeBC, WorkSafe Saskatchewan, OH&S Codes, etc.).
- Oversee preparation for, and response to, internal and external audits, inspections, and certifications (e.g., COR, BRC).
- Conduct regular risk assessments and implement corrective/preventive action plans.
- Lead the development and enforcement of companywide health and safety policies and procedures.

Program Development & Implementation
- Standardize and modernize safety programs, training, and systems across all facilities.

Direct the implementation of emergency preparedness, incident investigation, and return to work programs.
Oversee health and safety committees at each site, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and effective worker participation.
- Leverage digital tools (e.g., Alchemy, online learning platforms) to enhance training delivery and compliance tracking.

Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and support the safety team (Manager, Advisor, Specialist) to ensure consistent implementation of safety programs.
- Provide coaching and development opportunities for OHS team members, building capacity for succession and growth.
- Collaborate with HR, Operations, and Plant Management to align safety initiatives with workforce planning and employee engagement.

Reporting & Communication
- Provide regular updates to the VP of HR and executive team on safety performance, trends, and risk areas.
- Communicate effectively with site leadership and frontline employees to reinforce safety culture and compliance expectations.
- Represent the company in interactions with regulatory agencies, auditors, and external stakeholders regarding OHS matters.

**Qualifications**:

- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC), or equivalent designation required.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive OHS experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role in manufacturing, food processing, or related industries.

Strong knowledge of provincial and federal occupational health and safety legislation, standards, and certification frameworks (e.g., COR, BRC, HACCP, WSIB/WorkSafe).
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams across multiple sites and jurisdictions.
- Exceptional communication, coaching, and change management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem solving abilities, with proven results in reducing workplace incidents and improving safety culture.
