**Main Purpose & Function**
The Volunteer Coordinator develops, organizes, plans, implements, and coordinates the Volunteer Program at the Evelyne Saller Centre. The program serves the patrons of the Centre and provide opportunity for community members to learn job and basic life skills in order to foster independence and self worth.
The Volunteer Coordinator oversees the day-to-day operations of the volunteer program, including: recruiting, supervising, training, and scheduling volunteers in the Centre; managing conflicts and enforcing the Centre’s code of conduct using exceptional communication and conflict resolution skills; monitoring and evaluating programs through data collection and analysis; participating in programs and activities including out trips and overnight camps; and developing community partnerships to achieve program objectives. In addition, the Volunteer Coordinator engages in the development of and provides leadership to the volunteer board of the Friends of Evelyne Saller Centre Society.
This position has a non-standard work week. The regular work week will be Tuesday to Saturday, but there will also be some evenings and other weekend days required.
**Key Contacts and Reporting Relationships**
The position reports to the Senior Manager of the Evelyne Saller Centre. The Volunteer Program Coordinator directly supervises the volunteers of the Evelyne Saller Centre, providing direction, coaching, and training to the volunteers. This position also interacts with the residents of the Downtown Eastside, supports the Friends of the Evelyne Saller Centre Society Board, liaises with social service agencies in the community, and communicates with various departments within the City of Vancouver, other municipalities, and provincial government.
The Volunteer Program Coordinator provides information and support to the Recreation Department, is an active member of the Centre Leadership Team, and assumes the role of Staff in Charge as per the scheduled rotation.
**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**
- Establishes a safe, healthy, and positive environment for staff, volunteers, and community members to engage in the delivery of a volunteer program.
- Develops, plans, implements and evaluates volunteer programs and activities that meet both Centre and volunteer needs.
- Creates volunteer programs and opportunities that foster an environment which values the role of the volunteers in assisting the Centre to meet its mandate.
- Plans, develops, and implements an ongoing recruitment strategy for volunteers.
- Personally leads or instructs patrons and volunteers in various activities, including special events, out trips, and overnight camps.
- Consults and collaborates with the Friends of Evelyne Saller Centre Society Board, community members and agencies to develop programs and services to meet the current and merging needs of the Centre and its patrons.
- Provides work direction and support to volunteers and designated staff, including related training and orientation.
- Assists volunteers experiencing crisis; provides support or referrals as required.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of reports, records, correspondence, and promotional material. Provides information to patrons, community members, groups and agencies to promote and encourage participation in activities and programs at the Centre.
- Assists in developing Centre policies and procedures; deals consistently and tactfully with groups or individuals who fail to observe them.
- Assists in writing grants and maintains operating and administrative records as necessary to meet reporting requirements.
- Performs well in a stressful and demanding work environment and responds to emergencies responsibly.
- Supports and fully participates in the Evelyne Saller Centre leadership team through demonstrated leadership and action on strategic priorities, initiatives, and collaborations.
- Leads activities where lifting, walking, and assisting others may be required.
- Acts as a resource to staff.
