Consider joining our committed team of staff and being part of an innovative, inclusive and rewarding workplace. **Main Purpose & Function**: Working closely and in collaboration with the Volunteer Programmer and Centre programming staff this position assists in oversight of the day to day operations of the Carnegie Community Centre volunteer program to ensure purposeful volunteer opportunities and services are accessible and meet the needs of the low income residents of the Downtown Eastside Community. Carnegie Community Centre serves as an important resource to Vancouver’s diverse Downtown Eastside community. Patrons participate in the educational, recreational, cultural and social programming; enjoy the delicious low cost meals offered at the cafeteria; or simply enjoy the Centre as the “living room of the Downtown Eastside". The Volunteer Program reports to the Assistant Director - Carnegie Community Centre, within Community Services. Carnegie Community Centre serves as an important resource to Vancouver's diverse Downtown Eastside community. The volunteer program is the driving force behind the delivery of every program and service provided by the Carnegie Community Centre. **Specific Duties & Responsibilities**: The schedule includes some evening and weekend work. This position is responsible for: - Coordinating and monitoring the activities of a large number of volunteers, and instructors including the recruitment, screening, intake, orientation, placement, training and recognition of volunteers. - Participating in organizing and coordinating a variety of activities and events related to the volunteer program. - Providing ongoing support and encouragement for volunteers/instructors; mediates conflicts between volunteers/instructors or staff and volunteers. - Providing lay counseling to volunteers and refers to community resources as appropriate. - Maintaining a variety of files, Better Impact Volunteer Software and data/data entry records and statistics; prepares a variety of materials such as job descriptions, certificates, and letters of appreciation, reference letters, newsletter and promotional articles invitations and posters. - Soliciting donations in support of the volunteer program. - Organizing/coordinating special events, daytrips; participating with senior programming staff on planning and implementation of larger events such as volunteer camping trips. - Providing leadership for specific Volunteer Appreciation Week, training workshops, and in consultation with senior programming staff, other events and programs. - Assuming responsibility for the Volunteer Programmer in times of absence or vacation. Additionally, assuming responsibility for the Centre in the absence of superiors, including facility supervision and security and makes minor decisions related to same. - Experiencing in office administration methods and procedures. - Maintaining records and provide verbal and written instructions in a team oriented environment. - Facilitating good working relationships. **Qualifications**: Education & Experience: - Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by some university level courses in the social sciences plus some related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. - Occupation First Aid Level one (1) certificate, or the ability to obtain one, is required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - Considerable knowledge of the methods, techniques policies and procedures pertaining to the recruitment and coordination of a large volunteer group. - Working knowledge of the philosophy, aims and objectives of the Carnegie Centre and its programs. - Working knowledge of the interests, problems and needs of the residents of the Downtown Eastside. - Working knowledge of recreational, health and social service resources in the area. - Working knowledge of fundraising and office administration methods and procedures. - Ability to recruit and appropriately place volunteer workers. - Ability to motivate and encourage volunteers, instructors and provide advice and referrals as appropriate. - Ability to facilitate good working relationships among volunteers, staff and patrons and to mediate conflicts involving volunteers. - Ability to organize, coordinate and host various types of events and activities, and
