**UNIT PROFILE**:
The Forensic Psychiatry Program work towards restoring and maintaining the mental health and well-being of mentally disordered adult offenders while managing risk as mandated by the Criminal Code of Canada and ordered by the Ontario Review Board. This multi-disciplinary team includes nursing and allied health professionals working together to provide a wide range of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services. In this capacity the Forensic Psychiatry Program provides: clinical, risk and medico-legal assessments, inpatient treatments in General and Secure environments, and outpatient treatment and community reintegration services/support for the Central-South region and Halton.

As the initial point of contact, the Forensic Intake Coordinator is responsible for coordination of the intake process for persons ordered to the Forensic Psychiatry Program by the Ontario Review Board (ORB). This includes, but is not limited to, referrals for court ordered assessment or secure/general detention. The Forensic Intake Coordinator liaises with provincial forensic services, court services, crown attorneys, defence counsels, judges, and correctional facility personnel and has the authority to offer and commit resources to address incoming Orders.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Master’s Degree in a regulated Health Care Profession discipline (ie. Social Work, Nursing, Psychology) is preferred; other relevant and related disciplines may be considered.
- Membership in a professional regulatory body/college is preferred.
- 3 to 5 years of practical and related experience working within a Forensic Psychiatry environment with patients under the order of the ORB.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Canadian Criminal Code and Mental Health Act, particularly sections dealing with the mentally disordered offender.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the interface of the Forensic Psychiatry Program with the court, police, and correctional systems with an ability to develop working relationships with key personnel in each of these systems is required.
- Demonstrated critical thinking and operational planning skills for ensuring effective patient flow through the Forensic Psychiatry Program required.
- Effective verbal and written communication and persuasion skills are required for convincing the court system of the most appropriate course of action given the nature of each patient’s offence, history and presenting diagnosis as SJHH is a medium security facility offering specific services.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Act as initial point of contact for information, inquiries, and forensic patient referrals, liaising with crown attorneys, defense counsels, judges and correction facility personnel, as well as other provincial forensic programs, community based clinicians/agencies, family doctors, police, general psychiatric units, and family members.
- Contribute to assessment of patients ordered to undergo Fitness to Stand Trial assessment as per direction from Psychiatrists.
- Act as representative of SJHH under the domain of the Forensic Psychiatry Program to authorize and commit resources including beds, assessments, and consultations.
- Research institutions that offer requested services not currently offered by SJHH and provides this information to the courts.
- Monitor and evaluate admission process within the Forensic Psychiatry Program, including record keeping of wait times and patient flow across the service, appropriateness of referrals and admissions, and establishing limits for wait time and patient flow across the service.
- Provide daily updates on behalf of the Forensic Psychiatry Program in the Provincial Bed Registry
- Advise clinical staff of legal status, clinical background, past psychiatric and court history of incoming forensic patients.
- Provides education to new staff, students and community partners in regards to the Forensic Psychiatry Program, Fitness to Stand Trial Clinic, and other areas pertinent to the Program.
