**What responsibilities will you have in this role?**
- Provides student advising support through assessing the qualifications and interests of prospective and current students, advising them on admissions procedures, course offerings, timetable conflicts, processing exemptions, adding/dropping of courses; using judgement to refer students to Program Coordinator as appropriate.
- Advises students and deals with students’ academic standing and program status.
- Ascertains student needs and goals and advises students concerning programs and alternative options available to achieve their goals.
- Ensures academic status of individual student reflects planned program. Intervenes effectively on behalf of students and applies conflict resolution skill and follows up to facilitate the correction and/or problem solving as it pertains to academic status, billing, graduation status and related escalated situations.
- Meets with students identified as experiencing Academic “at risk” situation mid-point in the first semester to identify and recommend support services and strategies to promote student success.
- Meets with students to develop probationary contracts (as per program requirements) and develop individualized academic pathways for students who have been unsuccessful in course(s), require a reduced workload, or returning students who have taken a temporary leave from their studies.
- Develops filing systems and manages information pertaining to student and applicant records using the Banner student record keeping system and STU-View/student advisory services.
- Acts as departmental contact, liaison and advocate for new, returning, domestic and international students, taking a proactive role in troubleshooting and problem solving for the students across all programs in the School of Nursing (SON), either intervening personally on their behalf as required or ensuring that the student perspective is provided when participating at meetings with the GBC Registrar’s Office or other departments (including Toronto Metropolitan University Departments for S118 students and Trent University for S122).
- Provides administrative and office support to faculty and academic coordinators.
- Acts as program liaison with key college departments including but not limited to; the RO, Scheduling, Accessible Learning, Counselling, International student services, financial aid and Facilities.
- Organizes and assists in facilitation of events such as New Student Orientation, make-up exam schedule and student Town Hall meetings and other ceremonies.
- Other duties as assigned.
**What qualifications do you need for this role?**
- Three-year diploma or degree or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution in Education, Community Services, Social Work or related fields.
- Minimum three years computer-related work experience, working in an office environment, with practical experience advising students and/or clients in a post-secondary educational setting or related environment with knowledge of programs, processes, policies, procedures, and campus resources preferred.
- Experience using developmental, appreciative, and intrusive advising models to build students personal, academic, and social success as they transition in, through, and beyond postsecondary.
- Proficient using MS Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Comfort using new software programs. Use of MS Publisher an asset.
- Demonstrate knowledge in working with a student information system in a post-secondary setting.
- Ability to articulate technical problems and solutions, excellent problem-solving skills.
- Experience facilitating conflict resolution.
- Demonstrated excellent communication, collaboration, teamwork, people skills, interpersonal, negotiation and problem-solving skills, high level of tact and diplomacy.
- Excellent organizational, planning, coordinating, and multi-tasking skills with demonstrated ability to manage the delivery of numerous complex and demanding tasks and competing deadlines.
