Student Support Advisor

**Purpose**:
To advance the Division of Students' vision as a 'Partners in Student Success', the multi-incumbent Student Support Advisor role delivers high quality student-facing services, that are tailored to and responsive to the needs of York University's diverse student population.Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Student Support & Advising (SSA), the Student Support Advisor role acts as a first point-of contact for students, and provides student advising across SSA areas, such as student financial support, admissions, tuition, student records and registration. Through evidence-based and theoretically informed practice, the Student Support Advisor role works, to continuously improve, develop and implement new initiatives, programs, workshops, and tools that support holistic student service, social integration, and student success. The role works collaboratively with colleagues and participates and contributes positively to the SSA team in the Office of the University Registrar (OUR) to execute on the Unit's mandate and strategic initiatives.The Student Support Advisor role is a student-focused professional who shares and lives the divisional values of Courage, Connection and Empathy. These values will be demonstrated through a commitment to service excellence, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), whereby the Advisor will contribute to a positive and supportive environment. The Advisor works in close collaboration with students, student groups, faculty, and staff within the OUR, academic units, colleges and across the University to provide an excellent advising experience for all students.
**Education**:
University Degree in Education, Adult Education, Higher Education, Psychology, Student Development, Counselling, or other directly related field, or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.
**Experience**:
- depth student advising. Experience in advising theory and practice, as well as student & adult learning and development is desired.
**Skills**:
- Proven ability to provide student-centered services, with a strong commitment to service excellence.
- Ability to contribute to a positive, supportive, respectful, and inclusive team environment of high-performance, with proven teamwork and relationship building skills.
- Ability to effectively support the needs of a diverse student population, and advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in a student services environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality while delivering excellent advising skills, including the ability to use sound judgement when resolving complex and sensitive issues. Ability to use a developmental advising approach and strategies for improving student experience.
- Skilled listener, with the ability to identify and respond to sensitive issues with empathy and diplomacy.
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated informal and collegial skills and co-creating action plans with students.
- Strong project coordination skills, including the ability to deal with conflicting priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Effective written and oral communication, public speaking, and presentation skills, as well as the ability to analyze and report on data and summarize complex information in writing.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Demonstrated ability to use a computer and proficient keyboarding. Competent in using online computerized student records system. Intermediate skills in word processing, excel for spreadsheets and PowerPoint for preparing presentations
- Ability to work independently to identify and accomplish key objectives within an environment of high volume and frequent interruptions.
- Ability to exercise initiative and work effectively as a team member to achieve and support unit/organizational goals.
