Coordinator, Elementary Indigenous Success
The Delta School District is hiring an Elementary Indigenous Success Coordinator. The overall goal of this position is to help improve the personal and academic success of Elementary students with Indigenous ancestry. Reporting to the District Principal of Indigenous Education, the Coordinator will work with members of the Indigenous Education Department as well as with members of the Learning Services team, specifically in Inclusive Learning, and the TFN Education Management to help provide wrap-around support for Elementary students.
The Elementary Indigenous Success Coordinator position will have as the main areas of focus to:
- Collaborate with members of the Inclusive Learning team to review students and families with Indigenous ancestry who are requiring: Tier 3 supports; assistance to re-engage students in school; or guidance with outside agency supports. The students may have high or low incidence designations and corresponding needs.
- Communicate with school personnel (Administrators, Teachers, Counsellors, Career Advisors, EAs, CYCWs) to discuss the needs of students who have been brought to School Based Team or who have been flagged by the Indigenous Education team’s monitoring process of attendance and report card data.
- Communicate with the Social/Emotional Behavioural Strategists (SEBS) to work with students who are experiencing behavioural difficulties or disengagement with school. This will include reviewing customized/unique Success Plans (unique from Individual Education Plans) with the SEBS for students with complex needs that will be shared with the schools.
- Develop and monitor a systematic program for tracking elementary student success (including attendance and report card data)
- Attend Integrated Care Management (ICM) meetings and help families navigate school, district, and community support and services to ensure a holistic wraparound approach is created for student success.
- Attend regular meetings in the Indigenous Education Department and the Learning Services department to ensure plans are in place and revised as necessary for students.
- Work in partnership with the Tsawwassen First Nation Education Department staff as the Indigenous Education department meets with them on a bi-weekly basis to review elementary TFN students.
- Work with the Indigenous Education team to support transitions - Preschool to Kn, Gr 3 to 4 and Gr 7 to 8.
- Work with the Indigenous Secondary Empowerment Coordinator to offer leadership opportunities to intermediate students.
- Co-plan elementary school visit content for the district Indigenous Cultural Mentor, to provide cultural experiences for students with Indigenous ancestry.
- Communicate with schools, and schedule the itinerant EA to provide an extra layer of support for students across the district.
- Collaborate with members of the Indigenous Education team to organize and deliver various events (e.g. Indigenous Cultural Family nights, Recognition Ceremony, National Indigenous People’s Day, etc)
- Provide professional learning opportunities for teachers on relevant topics throughout the school year.
**Requirements**:
- Preferred: Master’s Degree in Education,
- Demonstrated and thorough understanding of the historical context of the Indigenous population, and the effects of trauma on Indigenous communities; and the strengths-based perspective gained through education, professional observation, and practice.
- An awareness and understanding of the TRC Calls to Action and the District goal of Equity for all learners.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills to offer opportunities to students and their families.
- Experience working as a member of various school and district-level teams in support of student success.
