Student Advisor

Applications are invited for the regular position of part-time Student Advisor in the Academic Upgrading Division. The starting salary is $31.22 /hr for a 24-hour work week. Additional hours may be required at peak times during the year, such as the start or end of term. The position is located at the Hamilton office.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Workforce Development & Community Partnerships, the Student Advisor supports the Academic Upgrading program at Niagara College's Hamilton site. Key responsibilities include assessing and enrolling prospective students and providing ongoing guidance to help them achieve goals related to post-secondary education, apprenticeships, employment, or independence. The role includes case management, maintaining accurate records, and completing administrative, data tracking, and reporting tasks to meet student and ministry requirements.

The Student Advisor also delivers information sessions to promote the program internally and externally, participates in team operations, and serves as a key point of contact for inquiries from students, staff, and faculty, ensuring responsive and professional support.

**Responsibilities include, but are not limited to**:

- Meeting individually with learners to assess goals, skills, and barriers
- Reviewing prior education (e.g., transcripts) to confirm eligibility and determine academic needs
- Administering intake assessments; determining placements
- Developing individualized learning plans and scheduling in collaboration with faculty
- Orients new learners to the Academic Upgrading program structure, policies, and expectations
- Completing all intake documentation and ensuring file accuracy for ministry reporting
- Providing appropriate referrals if learners are not suitable or eligible
- Maintaining ongoing contact with learners throughout their academic journey
- Monitoring attendance, academic progress, and milestone completion
- Providing academic advising and referrals for personal or financial challenges
- Supporting students attending multiple campuses or transferring between upgrading programs
- Creating learning contracts and exit strategies for learners at risk of attrition
- Documenting interactions while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with guidelines
- Maintaining contact with community partners and referral organizations
- Participating in program meetings to review ministry targets
- Supporting department planning and evaluation, including marketing and outreach strategies

**Qualifications**:

- Three (3) year diploma/degree in Business, Social Science, Humanities, Social Services, Education, or a similar field of study
- Minimum of three (3) years' Practical experience providing academic advising support, guiding or teaching students or clients, in a post-secondary educational or social service setting
- Ability to work in an environment where diversity of people and situations are encountered
- Ability to manage, organize, and coordinate workload to meet deadlines, and to deal with multiple priorities
- Superb customer service and relationship management
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

This position is open to internal employees and external applicants. External applicants will not be reviewed until all eligible internal employees have been considered. Internal employees are those classified as regular part-time within the Part-Time Support Staff bargaining unit.

Niagara College is a place-based organization, and all positions are primarily based on campus. On-campus work allows for close collaboration and a strong team culture. While most work will be done in the office, we offer the flexibility for some remote work, as the job allows.
