Shaarei Shomayim is a Modern Orthodox community located in the heart of Toronto. We now count close to 650 families as members, have a vibrant youth program, and provide many learning opportunities for our members and community. We are seeking a self-starting, creative, and community-minded Part-Time Director of Youth & Teen Programming to organize, supervise, and implement all aspects of our synagogue-based youth program (birth–Grade 12). Time Commitment Average 15–20 hours/week. Additional time in months that include Jewish holidays. Key Responsibilities Program Leadership (Shabbat, Holidays & Weekly) · Plan and oversee engaging, age-appropriate content (tefilla, parsha, middot); arrange outside entertainment as needed; manage snacks and craft supplies. Oversee weekly Teen Shabbat programming (e.g., parsha chat) and Teen Minyan. Plan holiday programming including but not limited to Sukkah Hop; Youth Hakafot and Middle School/Teen Simchat Torah; Chanukah event; Purim Carnival + Middle School/Teen Purim; Pesach event (e.g., chocolate seder/chametz hunt); Middle School/Teen Shavuot tikkun; Youth Shavuot ice-cream party. Lead parent/child learning including the weekly Motzei Shabbat learning (November to March). Support programs such as the Labour Day Welcome Back BBQ, Lag BaOmer, and Yom Ha’atzmaut. Safety, Logistics & Environment Maintain a safe, welcoming environment for youth and leaders. Itemize and organize preschool toys and elementary board games; submit twice-yearly recommendations for new purchase Youth Leaders: Hiring, Training & Engagement · With the Youth Committee, define youth-leader roles and compensation. · Recruit, interview, and hire paid and volunteer leaders in August/early September. Train leaders before the High Holidays (including first aid and leadership development) and run one additional training session during the ye Relationship Building Build positive relationships with member families from preschool through high school; collaborate effectively with clergy, lay leadership, and office staff. Program Innovation With the Youth Committee and Youth Leaders, design 4–6 non-Shabbat/Yom Tov programs annually to meet evolving family needs creatively. Administration, Communications & Budget Create and manage the budget as per the allotted funds for youth programming; maintain up-to-date records of spending and program details (binder and/or shared drive). Publish a rolling 3-month youth calendar with program details and registration info as applicable. Submit quarterly updates for the shul bulletin; oversee youth social content; coordinate items for Shabbat weekly bulletin/email blast (Shabbat Matters; Kids Matters; Pesach and Rosh Hashana Bulletin; Weekly Eblast) with office staff and Youth Committee. Distribute monthly electronic timesheets (pay or community service), verify with the office, and coordinate with high schools to ensure efficient submission of volunteer hours. Attend required meetings and perform other related duties as needed Personal Qualities & Skills Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills; collaborative and initiative-taking; role-model aligned with Modern Orthodox values. Experience designing informal Jewish educational programming. Strong organizational and Microsoft Office skills; social-media savvy is an asset.
