Join North York General to accelerate your career Position Summary Coordinator, Fire and Life Safety The Fire & Life Safety Coordinator shall provide subject matter expertise and, in conjunction with the Manager, Security, Fire Safety and Parking, to ensure the NYGH Fire Prevention and life safety program, is in compliance with all applicable legislation at all NYGH sites. The role provides expertise in fire code compliance and other applicable legislation, as well as maintaining emergency plans related to Code Red and Code Green. The Coordinator ensures ongoing maintenance of building and life safety systems, and develops and implements fire-related training for staff. The position serves as an internal liaison with Toronto Fire Services and other authorities having jurisdiction, and provides expertise to Security, Project Planning, and contractors. On a practical level, you will • Ensure Fire Code compliance across NYGH by auditing, conducting activities, maintaining compliance databases, and developing/maintaining plans• Ensure compliance with all areas of the Ontario Fire Code• Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, or semi-annual inspections as required by the OFC, or ensure completion as outlined in delineation of responsibilities and section 2.8 of the Fire Code• Maintain and update Code Red and Code Green plans, including drawing maintenance• Inspect fire separations and doors monthly• Complete fire drills and training as assigned• Develop processes, procedures, and policies to ensure fire safety compliance and a robust fire safety program• Maintain, enforce, and develop departmental documentation including SOPs, emergency response plans, drawings, and literature• Develop and implement educational materials and in-services related to fire safety and evacuation• Provide training to staff on fire systems, fire safety, and related processes• Facilitate knowledge transfer and provide continuous learning opportunities (e.g., Fire Safety In-Service, tabletop exercises, online training)• Participate in NYGH committees and project teams as assigned• Respond to incidents, system failures, and hospital codes• Assist with development of annual budget and long-range capital planning to ensure compliance with applicable codes• Provide support to departments on projects requiring Fire Safety direction or involvement Qualifications • Diploma in Fire Protection Engineering Technology (3-year program)• Improving Fire Safety for Vulnerable Ontarians: Training for Owners/Operators of Care• Expertise in Fire Suppression Systems: Dry, Wet, Pre-action, and Deluge Sprinkler Systems• Knowledge of Fire Pumps and Standpipe Systems• Strong understanding of Principles of Fire Protection• Familiarity with NFPA Manuals, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act • Ability to review design drawings and specifications for new facilities and major renovations• Understanding of fire protection and prevention techniques and equipment • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and critical-thinking skills• Strong presentation, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills• Ability to apply, teach, mentor, and facilitate staff in current fire safety principles• Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels internally and externally• Certified Fire Inspector I and II (NFPA) preferred• CFAA Certification preferred• Valid Ontario G License What We Offer Working at NYGH means working with a dynamic team of fellow healthcare providers, staff, and volunteers in one of Canada’s leading hospitals.This is a Full-Time Regular position with 8 hour shifts, Predominantly Days with some evening, nights and weekends in the Fire and Life Safety department.
