The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Innovation & Commercialization Ecosystem Lead. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Ecosystem Lead will play a critical role in executing the strategic vision and objectives of the Innovation and Commercialization Strategy within the Cumming School of Medicine. The Ecosystem Lead will be supervised by the Associate Dean of Innovation and Commercialization.
The primary purpose of this position is to execute the strategic vision and objectives of the Cumming School of Medicine's goal of achieving excellence in innovation and commercialization. The job requires excellent organization and communication skills in order to clearly manage, describe, facilitate and ensure that all initiatives are executed efficiently and effectively.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Organize and manage workshops, pitch nights, and social events to foster a collaborative environment for medical innovators
- Oversee the administration of small-scale seed funding applications, ensuring efficient allocation of resources to promising projects
- Work with Precision, Equity & Social Justice Office and the Equity Office to ensure diverse and inclusive participation in all activities
- Collaborate with the dedicated media team to highlight significant achievements such as new devices, pivotal trials, and successful deals
- Make recommendations which may influence policy, procedures or practices within their department/unit
- Working with all stakeholders in innovation and commercialization in and outside University of Calgary
- Aligning innovation and commercialization activities between University of Calgary "main campus" and the Cumming School of Medicine
- Keep apprised and communicate new and emerging commercialization and innovation related funding opportunities to all interested stakeholders (i.e. faculty members, teams, and research support staff within institutes/departments), as appropriate
- Plan and execute awards and recognition events to celebrate the commercial impact of our innovators
- Assist in developing courses and modules on innovation and commercialization for faculty, staff, and students
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required; Graduate degree (e.g., MSc or PhD) preferred
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years related experience in management and operations, in building collaborative teams and executing multi-disciplinary and/or multi-institutional initiatives
- A combination of education, training and experience may be considered
- Experience working within commercialization and innovation programs
- Experience with university-industry relations considered an asset
- Excellent oral and written communication
- Experience and comfort presenting to diverse groups of stakeholders
- Experience with budget development and management
- Advanced analytical, organization, and planning skills
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and funders
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities, act decisively and to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment on a wide range of issues, using discretion and maintaining confidentiality
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and within a team, and adapt to multiple competing priorities to develop new initiatives and program directions as needed
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
