Job Summary
A Clinical Mentor at Cornwall Community Hospital is an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) with frontline experience who will be employed in a supernumerary position to provide mentorship and support to newly graduated nurses, internationally educated nurses, and nurses looking to upskill. The Clinical Mentor will work collaboratively with nurses to identify and develop learning goals, facilitate learning opportunities, and provide ongoing support to ensure continued professional growth and integration into the hospital.
Key Responsibilities
- Take a learner-centered approach, being patient and supportive of nurse learning
- Work collaboratively with nurses to identify and develop learning goals specific to their needs
- Actively facilitate learning opportunities that are relevant to the nurse and clinical unit learning objectives/competencies
- Liaise and consult regularly with the Clinical Nurse Educator and/or Manager to facilitate effective transition to independent practice and achievement of expected outcomes
- Act as a coach and mentor for nurses, providing ongoing support to ensure continued professional growth and integration into the hospital
- Promote a mentoring environment, empowering nurses to ask questions and develop their communication, problem-solving, clinical, and professional skills
- Assist nurses with their development of communication, problem-solving, clinical, and professional skills
- Work alongside nurses as they demonstrate components of their practice
- Respond positively to the immediate concerns and needs of nurses and other team members if unforeseen problems arise
- Provide regular feedback, both formative and summative, to nurses, Clinical Nurse Educator, and/or Manager about the learner's performance
- Facilitate clinical skills hands-on experience and other professional development activities for learners at the bedside and on the unit
Requirements
- A Registered Nurse (RN) with current clinical expertise in nursing skills
- 2-3 years' experience on the respective unit (Acute Medicine/Women & Children's Health/Inpatient Mental Health) preferred
- Experience in Clinical Education/Teaching of undergraduate nursing students, or other relevant teaching experience
- Experience with the Clinical Extern program is considered an asset
