Clinical Intake/Assessment Counsellor

The Clinical Intake/Assessment Counsellor position is a key member of the Intake service team at Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority, responsible for providing assessment, support, and clinical direction on all incoming referrals for Nodin services. This role involves conducting intake assessments, providing additional clinical assessment, crisis intervention, safety planning, and harm reduction education to pending clients as required.
The Clinical Intake/Assessment Counsellor works closely with community resources and develops strong working relationships with referral sources. They collaborate with the intake team and other Nodin Mental Health Counsellors to ensure seamless service delivery.
Key Qualifications- Preference will be given to individuals of First Nations ancestry.
- Minimum education requirement is equivalent to high school graduation and completion of a diploma training program in mental health or equivalent education from a recognized college.
- Registration with the College of Psychotherapy or College of Social Workers or another recognized professional college is required prior to or within a year of commencing employment.
- At least 5 years of recent experience working with children, adolescents, and/or families in a mental health clinical capacity is required.
- A related university degree is an asset.
- Addictions-related courses are an asset.
- Strong interviewing skills with clients and experience as an intake counsellor are definite assets.
- Effective time management skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment are essential.
- Self-starter, analytical, problem-solving capability, and ability to work under minimal supervision are necessary.
- Experience assessing high-risk clients and responding appropriately is required.
- Certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills is an asset.
- Extensive knowledge of community resources or a willingness to learn is required.
- Understanding of crisis intervention and trauma-informed care is preferred.
- Excellent time management skills to maintain a busy schedule are essential.
- Confidence in speaking with clients and referral sources is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain rapport with clients and partners are necessary.
- Proficiency in typing and computer skills are required.
- Ability to use an electronic medical record is essential.
- Accurate and timely completion of client documentation is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy are essential.
- Ability to follow or assist in the development of standard clinical operating procedures is required.
- Knowledge of First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout region and ability to communicate in one or more of the First Nations dialects are assets.
- Previous experience working with First Nations communities is an asset.
- Receive referrals from Intake Workers and prioritize them based on safety, date received, and crisis situations.
- Confirm client interest in services and explain services offered.
- Conduct intakes, assessing client needs, safety, and goals for counselling.
- Provide client-centered, trauma-informed brief phone support as required.
- Collaborate with Nodin's team to ensure smooth transition of care, including attending case reviews as necessary.
- Maintain accurate, factual, and objective records of clinical care.
- Protect client confidentiality and secure records.
- Follow duty to report requirements as necessary.
- Participate in training applicable to this position.
- Handle sensitive/confidential material in accordance with office policy/PIPEDA/PHIPA.
- May be required to travel for future development of Nodin.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Immediate Supervisor.
