Research Assistant

The Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University is seeking a highly skilled Research Assistant - Engineer to join our team. As a research-intensive campus, we offer a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that drive innovation and knowledge generation.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct research activities involving non-destructive testing of utility poles in a lab setting and periodic field activities.
- Correlate electric signals to physical properties of utility poles and develop models to predict service life and maintenance protocols.
- Research and identify indicators reflecting health conditions and assess the integrity of timber structures.
- Complete research on the utilization of flax shives, including literature searches and experiments.
- Carry out data analysis on large-scale data sets, including field data collection on density, moisture, and residual levels of wood preservatives.
- Maintain and operate complex reactors and instrumentation.
- Undergraduate degree in mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineering, plus two years of engineering experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
- Experience with model development, scientific literature review, data collection, and analysis, as well as supervising students.
- Demonstrated excellent analytical skills, strong attention to detail, and organizational and prioritization skills.
- Proven strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
- Ability to lift up to ten pounds on a weekly basis and walk periodically for up to six hours at a time in field conditions.
- Valid Nova Scotia driver's license.
- Experience in machine learning/data management.
- Professional Engineering designation.
