**About the Role**

As a Senior Counsel, Property & Casualty Litigation at Co-operators, you will be responsible for handling a variety of moderate to high complexity bodily injury and property matters on behalf of The Co-operators group of companies or its insured clients.

**Key Responsibilities**

  • Provide general legal advice, training, guidance and direction to agents, insured clients, and staff of The Co-operators.
  • Support the Senior Counsel, AVPs and VP, General Counsel, P&C Litigation on higher complexity claims litigation files or projects, as necessary.
  • Assess situations and provide advice as required and/or determine the need for experts, as well as identify issues which need to be brought to the attention of, or require the involvement of the AVPs, or VP, General Counsel, P&C Litigation, or other stakeholders.
  • Provide training and support to claims personnel as well as supporting the Senior Counsel and AVPs on more complicated claims litigation.
  • Recommend improvements and changes in process to reduce financial and legal exposure.

**Requirements**

  • Minimum of 6 years of insurance defence or plaintiff personal injury experience (10+ years of experience preferred) and appropriate trial and/or hearing experience.
  • Law Degree (LLB, JD or comparable).
  • Member of the body regulating lawyers in the province or territory of [insert province or territory in which the lawyer will work].
  • Strong ability to think critically, to present information effectively and collaborate effectively.
  • Excellent communication abilities (particularly drafting), both technical and plain English and can interact effectively with all levels of the organization, particularly senior management.
  • Effective negotiation skills combined with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and understand case laws and statuses.
  • Ability to service clients in or around the Province of Ontario.
