Job Summary

The Associate Physician (AP) plays a crucial role in the Division of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at BC Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital. Reporting to the attending plastic surgeons, the AP works in a team-based setting to increase capacity and service delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Rounds on surgical patients with team members, including staff surgeons, fellows, residents, and allied health professionals.
  2. Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, and medication reconciliations in accordance with College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia and PHSA standards.
  3. Participates in the management of day-to-day patient care, including writing medical orders in Cerner and enabling patient transfers from the PICU to the ward.
  4. Orders investigations and follows up on results.
  5. Arranges consultations with other departments/divisions for patient care.
  6. Participates in discharge planning for ward patients.
  7. Responds to in-hospital emergencies in consultation with attending staff.
  8. Communicates with families, consultant physicians, and referring physicians regarding patient management plans.
  9. Performs procedures within scope, including wound assessments, burn care, and surgical procedures.
  10. Assists in the operating room, emergency room, and minor procedures room.
  11. Provides teaching and supervision for medical students and residents.
  12. Attends morbidity and mortality rounds, QA/QI sessions, and educational/research activities.
  13. Complies with CPD reporting requirements.
  14. Participates in scheduled on-call duties.
Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess:

  • A medical degree from a World Directory of Medical Schools-listed institution.
  • A minimum of two years of accredited postgraduate training in pediatrics or a surgical discipline, verified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
  • Successful completion of the Royal College Subspecialist Examination Affiliate Program in Pediatric Critical Care.
  • Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination or Steps 1-3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations.
  • Meeting the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia's English language proficiency requirements.
  • Eligibility for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia in the Associate Physician class.
  • Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or the ability to live and work in British Columbia.

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety.
