Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mass Spectrometry Lab Scientist to join our team at the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for leading mass spectrometry assay development projects and providing technical expertise to support the development of new methods and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mass spectrometry assay development projects, including data interpretation, troubleshooting, and optimization of sample preparation and experimental design.
  • Provide technical advice and direction to staff on the use of mass spectrometry equipment and procedures.
  • Develop and optimize method parameters, including compound-optimization experiments and chromatographic condition selection.
  • Research and develop novel mass spectrometric methods.
  • Stay up-to-date with new technologies and techniques in mass spectrometry, including sample preparation and analysis, chromatographic techniques, and automation tools.
  • Design, direct, and perform a wide range of experiments independently.
  • Perform experimental method validation following appropriate guidelines.

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant discipline, such as Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Forensic Sciences, or Toxicology, from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and varied sample preparation procedures in a forensically accredited laboratory.
  • Knowledge of programming languages, including Python, R, and Visual Basic, and familiarity with ISO 15189 or 17025 is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate experimental results and provide direction to personnel.
  • Commitment to developing knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments, including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, In Plain Sight, BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, and United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
