Job Summary:

The BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Laboratory Manager to lead the Clinical Genotyping team. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for coordinating and providing work direction to the team to conduct complex molecular-based laboratory procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Clinical Laboratory Drug Resistance Testing and Genotyping team to provide timely, accurate, and high-quality results to clients.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate job performance of team members, including scheduling and assigning work, developing priorities, and providing technical expertise.
  • Perform complex laboratory procedures, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, sequencing, and data analysis to produce reportable results.
  • Monitor and maintain the performance of laboratory equipment, including supply and quality of laboratory consumables, in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Prepare and validate the performance of laboratory reagent stocks, evaluate new procedures, equipment, and products, and prepare technical reports and summaries.
  • Ensure quality assurance and quality control standards are maintained by keeping appropriate records, collecting control data, and documenting current or potential problems with procedures and equipment.
  • Assist in establishing and revising laboratory policies and procedures, including preparing and updating laboratory manuals for approval by management staff.
  • Perform annual performance reviews for team members and provide input to management on staff hiring, performance, and disciplinary issues.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited post-secondary institution in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological sciences, and a minimum of five (5) years' experience working in a molecular biology laboratory.
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in a regulated/accredited clinical laboratory setting.
  • One (1) year's experience in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and recent related experience in molecular laboratory methods, demonstrated understanding of molecular biology concepts and techniques, and sound analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot non-conforming laboratory procedures and equipment, and to coach, develop, and motivate others.
  • Strong ability to engage others and work effectively with all levels of staff, and to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Strong verbal and technical writing skills, and demonstrated ability to work under pressure and to organize and prioritize competing demands.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to operate related equipment.
