The OpportunityFoundry aims to remove barriers and increase access to health and wellness services for young people aged 12–24 and their families. Through a network of youth-friendly centers across British Columbia and online resources, Foundry provides integrated mental health care, substance use services, primary and sexual health care, peer support, and social services. This makes it easier for young people to find support in their communities.
About the RoleThis Family Physician will work closely with the primary care team to provide episodic, enhanced, and longitudinal services. They must be able or willing to train in supporting gender-affirming care, opioid agonist therapy, and contraceptive support. Interventions may be provided one-on-one, to families, on outreach, or in groups. Flexibility in hours and availability outside typical office hours will be required to support drop-in hours and potential outreach.
- Provide assessment, triage, and support for youth in mental health, sexual health, physical health, and substance use areas;
- Utilize EMR supports and quality improvement initiatives to deliver proactive client care and maximize interdisciplinary team member involvement;
- Establish priorities for managing health, diseases, disorders, and conditions; communicate patient and family health findings, diagnoses, and priorities, outcomes, and prognoses;
- Support sexual health care, requisition contraception, labs, etc.;
- May conduct Medical Detox screening and withdrawal management;
- Collaborate with mental health and substance use services, emergency mental health, MHSU ACT teams, Youth Detox, community-based substance use services, Urgent Short-Term Treatment and Assessment, MCFD, and other youth-serving community partners;
- Collaborate and consult with physicians, nurse practitioners, or other healthcare providers as necessary to assess and diagnose patient status;
- May participate in research contributing to improved patient care and advances in primary care, health policy development, and population health;
The successful candidate will maintain a focus on youth population health (ages 12 – 24) by implementing screening and health promotion activities for at-risk youth populations. They will develop, implement, and evaluate policies related to primary care, interdisciplinary care, and health system practices. Additionally, they may take part in quality improvement initiatives to enhance client outcomes, including projects across acute and community care.
To excel in this role, you will require:
- A medical degree and eligibility for licensure in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia;
- Eligibility for a faculty appointment with University of British Columbia's Faculty of Medicine is an asset;
- Experience working with young adults and adolescents;
- Knowledge of reproductive health, including sexual health and STI prevention and treatment;
- Common physical and emotional problems faced by young people;
- Child and adolescent physical, psychological, and social development;
- Harm reduction strategies for young people;
- Health promotion and prevention strategies;
- Unique ethical, legal, and confidentiality issues in caring for young people;
- Hospital and community resources for young people;
You should possess excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team, and exceptional problem-solving skills. Critical thinking, creativity, and empathy are essential for this role.
