Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Plans Examination Specialist to join our team at Halifax Regional Municipality. As a key member of our Fire Prevention department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze complex construction documents, including building plans and property development proposals, to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and by-laws.
  • Conduct final inspections of new buildings to support transition to occupancy and ensure fire and life safety compliance.
  • Develop and maintain educational materials, procedures, and templates to communicate fire safety responsibilities to building owners.
  • Provide technical advice and direction to architects, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders on fire safety and building code matters.
  • Research and recommend alternative products, materials, and methods of construction to ensure compliance with building codes and standards.
  • Participate in committee meetings and working groups to develop and implement policies and guidelines related to plan review, building safety, and fire safety.
  • Collaborate with operations staff to address fire and life safety issues and ensure effective communication with stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Level 2 Building Official Diploma of Qualification and ability to obtain Level 2 Fire Inspector Certification.
  • Minimum ten (10) years' relevant experience administering the Fire Safety Act and Regulations, Building Code Act and Regulations, and/or related legislation.
  • Considerable experience reviewing complex building plans, including high-rise and industrial projects.
  • Valid Nova Scotia Driver's License and ability to successfully complete a Criminal Records Check.

Working Conditions

This is a permanent, full-time position with regular working hours. However, work outside these hours may be required to meet deadlines and attend meetings.

The successful candidate will be required to complete an employment security screening check.
