Position Summary

Are you a proactive safety champion with a knack for navigating hazardous materials and regulatory compliance? We are seeking a skilled WHMIS Coordinator to join our team at the University of Regina.

As a WHMIS Coordinator, you will assist academic and business units in the safe management of their hazardous products by supporting compliance with the legislated Workplace Hazardous Material Information System, and the National Fire Code of Canada. This position will assist, advise, recommend, and ensure all legislative and regulatory requirements are maintained with WHMIS, inventory controls, proper storage and transport of chemicals throughout the institution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with key stakeholders to ensure updated SDSs are obtained and distributed to all applicable areas as required;
  • Create and distribute workplace labels needed for any decanted or created hazardous products;
  • Manage, reconcile, and maintain the hazardous product inventories across campus using the U of R chemical inventory database;
  • Provide assessments and recommendations for chemical purchases made by lab personnel;
  • Develop and implement inspection policies and procedures, and maintains a schedule of routine inspections focused on chemical storage, quantity, compatibility and regulatory compliance;
  • Educate stakeholders on proper chemical storage, identify compatibility issues, and other hazards associated with an area's chemical hazardous materials storage;
  • Write reports on deficiencies found and provide consultation on required remediation activities;
  • Collect and analyze data related to chemical storage practices, processes and policies as well as hazardous material inventory practices, processes and policies;
  • Create and manage a reporting system to keep Regina Fire and Protective Services informed on the status of each area's fire load;
  • Advise stakeholders on chemical inventory management best-practices and work with them to build chemical management plans that suit their needs;

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in science, engineering, or an equivalent degree;
  • A combination of education or experience in a directly related field, such as Occupational Health & Safety or WHMIS coordination may be considered;
  • Knowledge of chemical safety;
  • Knowledge and understanding of WHMIS and National Fire Code of Canada;
  • Current certification in WHMIS 2015 and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods are considered an asset;
  • Experience in a post-secondary research environment is an asset;
  • Excellent planning, organizational, analytical and administrative skills;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with students, faculty, and employees;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in ensuring that work accomplished is complete and accurate in a fast-paced environment;
  • Self-motivating and able to set challenging goals and objectives, which are timely, realistic, and measurable;
  • Proficiency in the use of office software systems and databases to support accurate data entry and tracking of WHMIS controlled substances.
