Assistant Dean, Development, Allard School of Law

As a key member of the Allard School of Law team, the successful candidate will lead the execution of the long-term strategy for a moderately complex Development and Alumni Engagement (DAE) program. This program is responsible for securing an average of $2.5 million to $8 million annually through strategic fundraising initiatives. The ideal candidate will formulate and execute short and intermediate-term plans, ensuring alignment with the department and UBC's overall DAE strategy. This role will also focus on cultivating exceptional stakeholder and employee satisfaction, while maximizing operational efficiencies and resource development activity.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and operationalize Development strategies for a moderately complex DAE program, ensuring the department and UBC meet strategic objectives.
- Formulate and execute short- and intermediate-term strategies for a moderately complex DAE program responsible for fundraising an average of $2.5 million up to $8 million annually.
- Manage team approaches with multiple campus stakeholders, leading to gift conversion at the optimal donor level.
- Provide critical support to donors and a variety of internal contacts, providing fundraising expertise.
- Manage the human, financial, and operational objectives of the program, including developing and implementing a comprehensive plan for identifying, cultivating, and stewarding major gift prospects and donors.
- Coach and motivate staff and volunteers to achieve program objectives, including fundraising goals.
- Develop and implement a targeted donor communications, recognition, and stewardship program.
- Develop proposals for key fundraising initiatives and priority projects as appropriate.
- Formulate the annual operating budgets for the program, consistent with UBC's established financial guidelines and business planning process.
- Implement DAE and UBC-related processes, policies, systems, and practices within the program that maximize operational efficiencies and competitive advantage.
- Oversee the delivery of alumni activities/objectives that impact the success of the program.
- Responsible for personally developing and managing a major gifts portfolio in support of funding priorities and meeting fundraising goals.
- Lead and manage a team responsible for executing the Development strategy within the program.
- Identify strategies and key performance goals and act as an advisor to direct reports, as well as supporting staff and volunteers.
- Set performance targets and measures, monitor, and manage overall performance of the program and direct reports.
- Ensure there is a comprehensive and effective succession management strategy in place for the program.
- Build the capabilities of the team to enhance their ability to achieve financial and operating strategy.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of related experience, including experience in major-gift fundraising and strategy development, significant alumni relations/advancement experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Advanced interpersonal skills to support the building of strong relationships with diverse groups of people.
- Excellent negotiations skills with the ability to influence decisions to achieve objectives while maintaining policy and best practice.
- Diplomatic problem-solving and negotiations skills to resolve issues within own area and/or across functional areas.
- Strong understanding of industry best practices as well as practices within other large/complex institutions.
- Advanced conceptual abilities and proven ability to implement high standards.
- Excellent knowledge of UBC procedure and policy.
- Experience managing the performance of direct reports through a performance management process.
- Experience managing multiple projects with multiple deadlines.
- Strong understanding of accounting and budgeting principles.
- Strong understanding of legislation and regulations as they apply to own area.
