Job Summary
As a key member of the Allard School of Law's development team, the Assistant Dean, Development will play a critical role in leading the execution of the school's long-term strategy for fundraising. This involves formulating and executing short- and intermediate-term plans to ensure alignment with the school's goals and objectives. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing strong working relationships with donors, alumni, and other stakeholders to cultivate exceptional stakeholder and employee satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and operationalize development strategies for the Allard School of Law, ensuring alignment with the school's long-term strategy.
  • Formulate and execute short- and intermediate-term plans to achieve fundraising goals, ensuring strategies are concretely linked to the school's objectives.
  • Manage team approaches with multiple stakeholders to achieve gift conversion at the optimal donor level.
  • Provide critical advice on the interpretation and implementation of academic and fiscal policies for fundraising, senior administrators, and development staff.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive plan for identifying, cultivating, and stewarding major gift prospects and donors.
  • Coach and motivate staff and volunteers to achieve program objectives, including fundraising goals.
  • Understand and successfully navigate the philanthropic industry, including locally, regionally, and globally.
  • Contribute to the school's objective to maximize private and public sector support for the University.
  • Develop and implement a targeted donor communications, recognition, and stewardship program.
  • Develop proposals for key fundraising initiatives and priority projects as appropriate.

Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience, including experience in major-gift fundraising and strategy development, significant alumni relations/advancement experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to support the building of strong relationships with diverse groups of people.
  • Advanced negotiations skills with the ability to influence decisions to achieve objectives while maintaining policy and best practice.
  • Diplomatic problem-solving and negotiations skills to resolve issues within own area and/or across functional areas.
  • Strong understanding of industry best practices as well as practices within other large/complex institutions.
  • Advanced conceptual abilities and proven ability to implement high standards.
  • Excellent knowledge of UBC procedure and policy.
  • Experience managing the performance of direct reports through a performance management process.
  • Experience managing multiple projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of accounting and budgeting principles.
  • Strong understanding of legislation and regulations as they apply to own area.

Working Relationships
The Assistant Dean, Development will work closely with the Dean, senior administrators, development staff, and other stakeholders to achieve the school's fundraising goals. This includes developing strong working relationships with donors, alumni, and other stakeholders to cultivate exceptional stakeholder and employee satisfaction.
