Job Summary

The Associate Physician (AP) plays a vital role in the Division of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at BC Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital. As a member of the team, the AP practices under the direction and supervision of attending plastic surgeons, working in a structured, team-based setting to increase capacity and service delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Rounds on surgical patients with team members, including staff surgeons, fellows, residents, nurse practitioners, and allied health members.
  2. Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, medication reconciliations, adhering to College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia and PHSA standards.
  3. Participates in patient care management, including writing medical orders in Cerner and enabling patient transfers from the PICU to the ward under a surgical MRP.
  4. Orders investigations and follows up on results.
  5. Arranges consultations with other departments/divisions for patient care.
  6. Participates in discharge planning for ward patients.
  7. Responds to in-hospital emergencies, communicating with families, consultant physicians, and referring physicians.
  8. Performs procedures within scope, including wound assessments, burn care, and surgical interventions.
  9. Assists in the operating room, emergency room, and minor procedures room.
  10. Provides teaching and supervision for medical students and residents.
  11. Attends morbidity and mortality rounds, QA/QI sessions, and participates in quality improvement projects.
  12. Complies with CPD reporting requirements and participates in professional development activities.
Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess:

  • A medical degree from a World Directory of Medical Schools-listed institution.
  • A minimum of two years of accredited postgraduate training in pediatrics or a surgical discipline, verified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
  • Successful completion of the Royal College Subspecialist Examination Affiliate Program in Pediatric Critical Care.
  • Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination or Steps 1-3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations.
  • Meets the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia's English language proficiency requirements.
  • Eligibility for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia in the Associate Physician class.
  • Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or the ability to live and work in British Columbia.
