Job Title: Academic Critical Care Hospitalist

The Department of Medicine at McMaster University invites applications for a Critical Care Hospitalist. The successful candidate will hold a full-time academic appointment in the Department of Medicine and academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience.
Position: Academic Critical Care Hospitalist / Nocturnist, with a Full-time active staff appointment at Hamilton Health Sciences. Clinical activities for this position will occur primarily at the Hamilton General Hospital and will be focused on the cardiovascular intensive care unit (4-6 nights/month), the post-cardiac surgery ward (6-8 weeks/year), and the post-cardiac surgery rapid follow-up clinic.
Applicant Qualifications: Applicants must be eligible for or have certification from either the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the Canadian College of Family Physicians. Applicants must also be eligible for or have licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Applicants must have formal training in critical care, demonstrate evidence of proficiency in management of critically ill patients and have experience managing patients in the cardiovascular intensive care unit, including patients with microaxial flow pump and on ECMO. Advanced point of care ultrasound training is required. Research and quality improvement experience would be an asset.
Responsibilities: The successful individual is expected to be involved in formal teaching activities in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programs. Such activities include but are not limited to Medical Foundations tutoring, Clinical Skills preceptoring as well as teaching academic half days and point of care ultrasound for the critical care trainees. They will also be expected to participate in all the appropriate hospital departmental and university research, quality improvement, educational and administrative activities as set out by the clinical and academic leaders.
Requirements: Candidacy for this position will be assessed by an applicant portfolio of training and experience. This will include their postgraduate training and specific experience with critical care medicine, as well as their grant and publication history, awards, prior teaching evaluations and any other professional development considerations. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills and thrive within the collaborative and interdisciplinary critical care program.
Work Environment: Hamilton Health Sciences is one of the largest hospital systems in Ontario and provides regional medical care to over 2 million people in southern Ontario. Hamilton Health Sciences is an academic hospital organization affiliated with McMaster University. The Department of Critical Care at Hamilton Health Sciences supports five Intensive Care Units across various sites in Hamilton, including Hamilton General Hospital, Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre and McMaster University Medical Centre.
Benefits: This is a Clinician Educator track role, and the successful candidate will hold a full-time academic appointment with McMaster University. Remuneration will be competitive with any night-time and weekend clinical coverage for an academic intensive care unit. This will include an hourly stipend rate for night shifts as well as appropriate billing within the province of Ontario.
