Job Summary
The 3rd Class Stationary Engineer performs operational work in a central heating and cooling plant or central heating plant and reports to the 1st Class Stationary Engineer. The incumbent must have significant knowledge of the operation of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems, including boilers, chillers, generators, combustion chambers, firing equipment, water pumps, valves, expansion joints, fans, distribution systems, and auxiliary equipment, including computer systems.
Key Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Operating and maintaining central heating and cooling plant equipment and systems
- Performing routine maintenance and repairs on plant equipment
- Conducting tests on mechanical equipment and water samples
- Preparing work orders and documents
- Compiling operational data for monthly reports to management
- Writing reports with recommendations
- Ensuring compliance with federal and provincial regulations related to environmental standards and occupational health and safety in plant operations
- Starting up and shutting down large oil and gas fired boilers and generators
- Adjusting controls that regulate output
- Performing preventive maintenance
- Removing and replacing parts
- Troubleshooting activities
- Working with a variety of computer software programs
- Conducting standardized tests to determine chemical concentrations in water
- Repairing and overhauling operating plant and extensive distribution systems equipment, pumps, valves, expansion joints, and fans
- Using a variety of hand and power tools
- Recording information in a written shift log
- Preparing reports, completing various forms, time sheets, travel claims, and procurement documents
Requirements
The incumbent must have:
- 3-5 years of experience at the Class 3 level
- Significant knowledge of the operation of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems
- Knowledge of testing methods to carry out tests on mechanical equipment and water samples
- Knowledge of administrative practices
- General knowledge of federal and provincial regulations related to environmental standards and occupational health and safety in plant operations
- Skills needed to start up and shut down large oil and gas fired boilers and generators
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work with a variety of computer software programs
- Manual dexterity to repair and overhaul operating plant and extensive distribution systems equipment, pumps, valves, expansion joints, and fans
- Written and verbal communication skills
Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation
The incumbent must have 3rd class Stationary Engineer certification.
