Building Attendant

The City of Hamilton is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Building Attendant to provide residential support and maintenance services to our residents. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the overall safety and well-being of our residents, while also providing exceptional customer service.
Key Responsibilities- Act as master keyholder of the building, providing access to tenants and emergency services as needed.
- Provide access to servicemen and contractors, ensuring timely completion of maintenance and repairs.
- Monitor fire alarm systems and other life safety systems, responding to emergencies and reporting irregularities to the Property Manager or Emergency Answering Service.
- Show apartments to prospective tenants, providing a positive and welcoming experience.
- Conduct building openings and lock-ups, ensuring the security and integrity of the building.
- Attend meetings and training as required, staying up-to-date on industry best practices and City of Hamilton policies.
- Inspect and report any building deficiencies or maintenance problems to the Property Manager or designate.
- Report vandalism or security issues to the Property Manager or Emergency Answering Service.
- Deliver letters, notices, or forms to tenants as required, ensuring timely and efficient communication.
- Maintain general security of the building, ensuring doors are properly secured and access is restricted as needed.
- Work in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures.
- Carry out light housekeeping duties as directed, including cleaning up broken glass, spills, and other messes.
- Sort and organize recyclables and garbage, ensuring a clean and tidy environment.
- Change and put out garbage bins, as well as pick up litter and maintain the overall appearance of the building.
- Perform minor repairs as directed, including toilet plunging, water shut-offs, and clearing drains.
- Previous maintenance and customer service experience, acquired through a combination of education and relevant work experience.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, taking initiative and making decisions as needed.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deal with tenants, contractors, emergency personnel, and Housing Staff with tact and diplomacy.
- Must be able to speak, write, and understand English.
- Understanding of basic emergency procedures, including fire alarms.
- Ability to perform daily inspections for fire inspections and maintenance deficiencies.
- Ability to perform minor repairs, including clearing drains, water shut-offs, or toilet plunging.
- Must be physically capable of carrying out light housekeeping duties.
- Must be physically able to walk up and down multiple flights of stairs and hallways to conduct necessary inspections.
- Must be available to provide shared coverage for the building, including evenings and weekends.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, including Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, including W.H.M.I.S. legislation.
