Job Summary

1. Key Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of equipment in the Materials Engineering Nicol and Jackson Hall teaching and research facilities within the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME). This includes:

  • Providing guidance and advice to undergraduate students, teaching assistants, faculty, and staff on the safe use of laboratory equipment and chemicals.
  • Overseeing the safe use of equipment by diverse individuals, including undergraduate and graduate students, teaching assistants, faculty, and staff.
  • Ensuring laboratory safety procedures are followed, including the proper use, storage, and recycling of chemicals, gas cylinders, and hazardous wastes.
  • Performing regular monthly safety inspections of fire extinguishers, fire hoses, emergency kits, and other safety devices.
  • Providing advice on safe practices and directing faculty, staff, and students to others on campus in the resolution of a safety issue or question.

2. Required Qualifications

The incumbent must possess:

  • A 3-year diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, or a related program, with 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills for interacting professionally with diverse individuals in a training/teaching setting.
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices, including housekeeping, safety, and chemical handling.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronics concepts in laboratory applications.
  • Demonstrated computer and software skills, including Excel, Word, MATLAB, and data acquisition systems.
  • Knowledge of common materials testing and heat treating instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated skills in materials engineering, including practical application in metallography, materials testing, and chemical analysis.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain inventory and stay within the department's procurement card limit when purchasing minor laboratory supplies and consumables.
  • Ability to work in a safe and diligent fashion, adhering to University policies and procedures, as well as regulations defined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Health and safety knowledge and training to handle emergencies, including WHMIS, Fire Extinguisher, First Aid, or related training.

3. Working Relationships

The incumbent will work closely with:

  • Departmental staff, faculty, and students who require technical guidance or assistance on the safe use of laboratory equipment.
  • Suppliers of equipment and other technicians within the department for repairs, servicing, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Other departments for testing or research, including tracking the use of equipment for service/usage fee purposes.

4. Work Environment

The incumbent will work in a fast-paced laboratory environment with:

  • Toxic, flammable, explosive, carcinogenic chemical, and biohazardous materials.
  • Delicate and expensive laboratory equipment.
  • Occasional work in a machine shop environment with inherent hazards, including noise, distracting, or dirty environments.
  • Occasional movement of heavy objects.
