Job Summary

Vancouver Community College is seeking a skilled Trades Instructor Assistant to support our trades areas. This role is responsible for assisting classroom instructors, managers, and other support staff in performing a wide range of duties, including administrative support, preparing and setting up shop projects, providing guidance to students, and coordinating facility tours and events.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative support, including responding to student inquiries, drafting correspondence, maintaining department meeting minutes, and preparing orientation packages for various programs.
  • Prepare purchase requisitions for supplies, parts, and equipment for instructional needs as requested.
  • Supervise shop activity in the absence of the instructor, respond to student queries, and offer advice and assistance relative to techniques, procedures, and methodologies.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot shop training aids and equipment.
  • Prepare and set up shop projects and construct training aids for departmental programs.
  • Maintain and update a wide variety of records, including student marks, apprenticeship documentation, and ELT enrollment, test files, and exams.
  • Coordinate facility tours and events, organize and maintain materials and equipment for internal and external promotional events.
  • Act as a liaison with external organizations, such as the Apprenticeship Board, Skills Canada, and industry contacts.
Requirements
  • Grade 12 plus Red Seal Certification in Heavy Duty Equipment or other related trades program and over one year of related experience working with heavy mechanical equipment and welding and cutting experience.
  • Forklift 1-4-5 certification required.
  • Proficiency in the operation of Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook).
