The Role

The Mechanical Engineer will be part of our engineering team that develops marine navigation and bridge systems for our government and naval markets. This role will involve designing, selecting, evaluating, and documenting mechanical components and their interconnection within the bridge systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to the design and development of navigation and bridge system products, creating and updating mechanical designs, and assisting with writing and maintaining our mechanical engineering standards and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct studies, experiments, research, and tests to contribute to the design and development of navigation and bridge system products.
  • Create and update mechanical designs based on commercial and military grade products and customized solutions.
  • Assist with writing and maintaining our mechanical engineering standards and best practices.
  • Train and mentor junior mechanical engineers on our mechanical standards and best practices.
  • Update and maintain our parts database.
  • Review hardware requirements, produce hardware design documents, and ensure the proposed solution meets the stated requirements.
  • Create mechanical designs and provide information to CAD team members for drawing production.
  • Review designs for adherence to industry and government standards.
  • Prepare written plans, calculations, designs, specifications, and material lists.
  • Carry out technical tasks requiring accuracy of calculations, completeness of data, and adherence to prescribed methods.
  • Interpret and analyze design data in preparing feasibility studies and prepare reports for assigned work, resolving technical problems within the scope of the assignment.
  • Provide design information and guidance to support personnel, and occasionally to suppliers, in preparation of detailed design, design testing, and prototype fabrication.
  • Ensure that the resulting design meets system, customer, and budgetary requirements and is compliant to industry and government standards.
  • Clearly communicate technical and design solutions to other departments.
  • Execute engineering change requests (CRs) as well as provide supporting justification data.
  • Follow workplace operating and environmental, health, and safety procedures and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field plus 5+ years of practical mechanical engineering experience.
  • Experience with mechanical design and design for manufacturing.
  • Experience with vibration, shock, thermal, and structural analysis (FEA and MathCAD).
  • Working knowledge of product certification testing to civilian and military standards.
  • Proven ability to analyze and solve hardware problems.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite and SharePoint.
  • Working knowledge of peripheral equipment, test, diagnostic, and measuring equipment.
  • Ability to thrive as a member of a project team.
  • Organized, able to handle multiple projects, and prioritize workload.
  • Working knowledge of certification to standards – knowledge of shipbuilding codes an asset – for example: Lloyds Rules.
  • Ability to design in a strategic manner taking into consideration reliability, ease of manufacture, and cost.
