SalaryThe estimated annual salary for this role is approximately $$64,000 - $82,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
Job DescriptionThis role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic laboratory environment where you will play a key part in preparing specimens for testing. Your duties will include preparing smears, staining and coverslipping slides, centrifugation, aliquoting, and loading samples onto specimen racks. You will also verify specimen identity and ensure that all specimens meet established criteria.
In addition, you will prepare culture media and stock solutions by weighing dehydrated media and chemicals, dissolving them in water or other solvents, measuring pH, and sterilizing by filtration or autoclaving. You will also receive incoming specimens and requisitions, checking for accuracy and completeness of information such as personal health number, name, date of birth, and tests required.
You will process test requisitions by entering patient data into computer systems, issuing new patient identification numbers where required, identifying duplicate record problems, obtaining or clarifying missing or questionable information, correcting errors and omissions in patient demographic data, and entering corrections into computer systems. You will also enter test requests into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Responsibilities also include recycling solvents according to established procedures, responding to requests for test results, faxing same as required, forwarding requests for test interpretation to Medical Laboratory Technologists in accordance with established procedures, receiving telephone/fax requests for information, and directing requests according to established procedures.
You will also file and organize records, such as requisitions, statistical information, and work schedules. Finally, you will identify and communicate operational issues and computer/equipment-related problems to your supervisor.
Required Skills and Qualifications- A Grade 12 diploma and successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, plus one year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to type at 25 words per minute.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
