Silgan Containers is seeking a Human Resources Coordinator to join our team. As a key member of our HR department, you will play a critical role in supporting the day-to-day operations of our Lachine plant in Montreal. Your primary responsibilities will include the administration of HR policies, procedures, and programs, as well as the management of facility safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and administer programs, procedures, and guidelines to align the workforce with the strategic goals of the HR Department.
  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.
  • Participate in department staff meetings and attend other meetings/seminars.

Human Resource Information Systems:

  • Process weekly payroll for Lachine hourly employees, including weekly updating and sign-off of individual timecards in UKG with shift changes, overtime, and both shift and attendance premiums.
  • Maintain Workday (HCM) for the Lachine Plant. Prepare and analyze reports necessary to carry out the functions of the department and company. Prepare periodic reports for management as needed or requested.
  • Utilize Human Resources software to the company’s advantage.
  • Partner with accounting and corporate payroll to maintain the payroll database.
  • Collaborate with Plant Leadership to ensure understanding of key HR Metrics.

Training and Development:

  • Assist with the utilization of the Learning Management System (LMS) which includes safety training and human resources training. Load monthly training modules and generate statistics and payouts through payroll.
  • Ensure plant employees complete required training per established deadlines.
  • Continuously access company training needs including new employee onboarding, management development, production cross-training, and safety.
  • Assist managers with the selection and contracting of external training programs and consultants when needed.
  • Provide necessary education and materials to managers and employees including workshops, employee handbooks, and standardized reports.
  • Maintain employee training records.

Employment:

  • Manage the recruitment process for hourly and salaried employees using the necessary procedures to recruit and hire.
  • Conduct interviews when needed staff is identified.
  • Review resumes for all candidates and interview hourly candidates for employment.
  • Serve on employee selection meetings and the safety committee.
  • Once the weekly schedule is posted by operations, HR will identify and contact employees (full-time or agency) necessary to ensure all positions are staffed.

Employee Relations:

  • Assist with the development of Human Resources policies for the company regarding employee relations and safety.
  • Partner with management to communicate Human Resources/Safety policies, procedures, programs, and laws.
  • Promote and maintain corporate programs that foster employee engagement, such as employee referral programs, leading by example programs, charitable giving programs, and others.
  • Recommend employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high level of employee morale and motivation.
  • Participate in the conduct of investigations when employee complaints or concerns are brought forth.
  • Advise managers and supervisors about the steps in the disciplinary process of the company. Counsel managers on employment issues.

Safety:

  • Maintain the Corporate Safety Manual for the Lachine plant. Ensure that site-specific programs are written and maintained.
  • Assist with the implementation of company safety and health programs. Track and post CNESST-required data and files reports.
  • Facilitate required monthly safety meetings and other plant-wide initiatives as determined appropriate. Circulate minutes of these meetings and ensure timely follow-up on action items.
  • Ensure all monthly safety training is completed and documented for all members of the staff.
  • Administer and publicize the corporate Safety Bingo program at the plant.
  • Administer all Safety Draws and Safety Lunches/Dinners at the plant.
  • Maintain and complete all monthly safety statistics for the facility.
  • Actively promote and engage a culture of safety.

Benefits:

  • Provide day-to-day benefits administration services. Assist employees with any claim issues.
  • Develop and schedule benefits onboarding and complete open enrollment annually.
  • Review and file workers’ compensation claims and work with safety on claims management.
  • Recommend changes in benefits offered, especially new benefits aimed at employee satisfaction and retention.

Plant Administrative Duties:

  • Meet and greet visitors to the Plant. Direct the use of iLobby as required.
  • Answer and direct incoming calls.
  • Document filing as required.
  • Receive and distribute incoming front office mail and courier.
  • Organize outgoing postal and courier shipments.
  • Order and organize office supplies.
  • Receive and scan invoices for Accounts Payable.

Legal Compliance:

  • Comply with all existing governmental and labor legal and government reporting requirements with the CNESST and other government agencies.
  • Maintain minimal company exposure to lawsuits.
  • Protect the interests of employees and the company in accordance with company Human Resources policies and governmental laws and regulations.

Organization Development:

  • Assist with organization development that addresses succession planning, workforce development, and organizational change.
  • Assist with employee communication and feedback through such avenues as company meetings, suggestion programs, employee satisfaction surveys, newsletters, employee focus groups, and one-on-one meetings.
  • Monitor the organization to ensure it supports the attainment of the company’s goals and promotes employee satisfaction.
  • Assist with the inclusion of the wellness, training, environmental health and safety, activity, and culture and communications committees.


Education:

Required: High School Degree or GED

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree or CEGEP in HR, Business, or equivalent: HR Certification.

Experience:

Required: 3 years of HR experience

Preferred: 5+ years of HR leadership experience

Skills: Required

Must be bilingual (English/French)

  • General knowledge of employment laws and practices.
  • Experience in workers’ compensation claim processing and legalities.
  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Office environment.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills.
  • Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
