We are seeking a skilled and experienced professional to oversee the operations of the Labour Relations division at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.

About the Role

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, providing legal advice and services with respect to labour and employment law. As a General Manager and Senior Legal Counsel, Labour Relations, you will be responsible for managing local collective bargaining, grievances and arbitrations, harassment/respectful workplace matters, employee misconduct investigations, discipline, and termination procedures. You will also oversee the Annual Offense Declaration process and act as a liaison between the Board and Union/Federation representatives.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the Labour Relations division, providing legal advice and services with respect to labour and employment law
  • Lead local collective bargaining negotiations
  • Manage grievances and arbitrations, including preparation and representation before tribunals and courts
  • Address harassment and respectful workplace issues
  • Investigate employee misconduct and implement disciplinary measures as necessary
  • Oversee the Annual Offense Declaration process
  • Serve as a liaison between the Board and Union/Federation representatives
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have excellent managerial skills, including the ability to direct and oversee a team of professionals. You should demonstrate exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to coach, mentor, and motivate teams. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders. A strong understanding of procedural fairness principles and experience working in education law are also required.

You must possess a minimum of 5-6 years of experience practicing law, with relevant experience in employment and labour relations matters, including arbitrations and human rights. You must be in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario and hold a license to practice law in Ontario.

The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of collective bargaining, labour relations, and employment matters, particularly as they relate to the education sector. Experience with grievance and arbitration process management, as well as applicable software applications, such as Microsoft Suite and Google Applications, is an asset.

What We Offer

We offer a competitive salary range of $145,941 to $171,825 per annum (Union Exempt, Level 11). The selected candidate will work Monday - Friday, 35 hours per week. Our benefits package includes comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
