Forensic Services Officer

Job Summary
As a Forensic Services Officer with BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of patients, staff, and the public. This position requires a unique blend of clinical knowledge, communication skills, and physical abilities to provide safe and secure escort services for patients in custody.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide safe and secure escort services for patients in custody, including transporting them to and from court, hospitals, and other facilities.
- Assume custody and transport patients in custody from outside agencies to the hospital, and vice versa.
- Search patients in custody prior to escort to ensure they are not carrying any dangerous items or substances.
- Consult with clinical staff and other resources to determine the security risk and classification of patients in custody.
- Apply restraining devices, such as handcuffs and leg irons, as required to ensure patient safety and security.
- Investigate instances of escape and work with local police to ensure public safety.
- Maintain building and ground security by conducting regular patrols and monitoring alarm systems.
- Provide training to staff on the use of alarm systems and selected restraint equipment.
- Interact with patients in custody in aggressive and/or volatile situations to diffuse the situation and reduce the escalation of aggression.
- Provide direction to patients while in court and exchange information with outside agencies as required.
Requirements
- Grade 12, plus two (2) years recent related experience in a secure correctional or mental health facility, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Completion of a recognized defensive tactics course, including training in the use of force, metal detection, search, and seizure.
- Eligible for appointment as a Special Provincial Constable.
- Current CPR certificate and valid BC Class IV Driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of applicable legislation and statutes, such as the Criminal Code of Canada.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to control and direct hostile/aggressive behavior.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Solid understanding of the use of force and applicable legislation as it relates to restraining uncooperative, hostile, or violent persons.
- Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
