About the Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled Social Worker to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a Social Worker - Youth Substance Use and Mental Health, you will be responsible for providing clinical assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of prevention and early intervention programming for adolescents at-risk for or who have mild substance use and/or mental health problems.

You will work as part of a team to provide a wide range of services in schools and communities, including screening, assessment, supportive counseling, referral, case navigation/management, early/brief intervention, outreach, and group programming. You will utilize principles from harm reduction, population health, community development, health promotion, and prevention, and early intervention to provide effective services.

About You

We are looking for a candidate with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and registration with the Nova Scotia College of Social Work. You should have at least two years of experience working with adolescents at-risk, community resources, harm reduction, and substance use. You should also have experience with interviewing skills, suicide risk assessment, and group facilitation.

You should have a critical understanding of health promotion/population health framework, harm reduction, community development, strengths-based methods, and readiness to change model. You should also have knowledge of best practices related to screening, brief/early intervention, outreach, and community linkages for youth at-risk for substance use and/or mental health problems.

You should be able to demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based health promotion programs and initiatives for youth at-risk for substance use and/or mental health problems. You should also be aware of community resources and programs, and have knowledge of harm reduction and adolescent substance use, mental health risks and problems for youth, and adolescent development.

You should have in-depth knowledge of patterns of youth substance uses and mental health problems, client-related characteristics, and an understanding of the challenges faced by youth at-risk for substance use and/or mental health problems. You should also have knowledge and experience with brief intervention models such as Motivational Interviewing/Solution focused models.

Hours

This is a permanent full-time position with 75 hours bi-weekly. Occasional evening and weekend shifts are required, and travel to various sites is necessary.

Compensation and Benefits

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary of $42.89 per hour. They may also be eligible for our benefits package, which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
