About the Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled Carpenter to join our team at IWK Health in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As a Carpenter, you will play a critical role in maintaining and altering walls, ceilings, doors, and cabinetry, ensuring the integrity and safety of our facilities.

Job Description:
  • Perform preventative maintenance duties on walls, ceilings, t-bar, doors, hardware, windows, and frames.
  • Measure, cut, shape, assemble, and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel, and other materials.
  • Build and repair cabinetry and millwork using hand and power tools.
  • Assist in minor construction and renovation projects by building new walls and ceilings.
  • Prepare layouts in conformance to buildings codes using measuring tools.
  • Fits and installs trim items such as doors, stairs, moulding, and hardware.
  • Replaces window glass and frames.
  • Repairs, alters, and removes shelving units.
  • Reads and interprets drawings, sketches, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Completes reports to create maintenance records.
  • Operates, uses, and maintains tools and equipment safely, economically, and in accordance with trade practices.
  • Participates in training and orientation of new staff and others as required.
Your Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Certified Journeyperson Carpenter as issued by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour or equivalent required.
  • Two (2) years' of related experience required.
  • Knowledge of the current edition of National Building Code.
  • Ability to work both in a team and independently.
  • Ability to react effectively to emergencies or other changes in work environment that require immediate re-prioritizing of tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety procedures and policies.
  • Ability to recognize and appropriately react to potential dangers.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work processes.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.

This is a permanent hourly position with a competitive salary range of $26.97-$28.97 per hour, based on experience.
