Job OverviewWe are seeking a detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant - Data Entry Specialist to join our team in Vancouver, BC. This is a full-time position with an estimated salary range of $55,000 - $65,000 per year, depending on experience.
Responsibilities- Receive patients by verifying test requisitions, confirming patient demographics, and entering data into our computer system.
- Print labels and affix them to requisitions, explaining procedures for specimen collection and responding to routine inquiries.
- Collect blood specimens from patients, labeling them correctly and disposing of sharps safely.
- Prepare specimens for analysis by checking identification and requisition, separating serum or plasma from cells, and preparing blood films.
- Process specimens by receiving, sorting, labeling, logging data, and batching for distribution. Store specimens according to established procedures.
- Send specimens to referral laboratories by logging information into the database, packaging according to legislated requirements, and placing them in designated pick-up areas.
- Perform receptionist duties such as answering phones, responding to general inquiries, taking messages, paging staff, relaying test results, and referring calls as needed.
- Print reports and labels, sort, file, and distribute lab results to physicians and nursing staff as requested.
- Maintain work areas by cleaning equipment, wiping surfaces, defrosting fridges, maintaining cryostat and frozen section rooms, identifying depleting stock, and notifying supervisors for replacements.
- Schedule and book patient appointments using a computerized scheduling system, making adjustments as necessary.
- Perform ECG testing by attaching electrodes, running tests, and printing reports for designated personnel.
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent, combined with one year of recent experience or completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program.
- Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Physical ability to perform job duties.
- Organizational skills and ability to operate related equipment.
- Commitment to developing knowledge of legislative obligations and provincial commitments, including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
- Strong asset: Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples, familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism and cultural safety.
