Job Title: Cytotechnologist/Histology MLT

At Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, we are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Cytotechnologist/Histology MLT to join our Laboratory Services team.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing laboratory procedures for histology functions and grossing, microtomy, embedding, staining, and ensuring the completion of assigned workload. They will also be responsible for screening each cytology slide and recording all findings for review by the pathologist.

Responsibilities:
  • Performing laboratory procedures for histology functions and grossing, microtomy, embedding, staining, and ensuring the completion of assigned workload.
  • Screening each cytology slide and recording all findings for review by the pathologist.
  • Operating, troubleshooting, maintenance, and cleanliness of laboratory equipment and work area.
  • Participating in teaching, educational, safety, and quality improvement programs.
  • Observing and understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to hospital and departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Adhering to the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) requirements.
  • Performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested.
  • Performing other duties related to and consistent with the job classification, as required.
  • Performs all procedures using Standard Precautions.
  • Collating statistical information pertinent to the area of responsibility.
  • Maintaining up-to-date cytology technical procedure manual in compliance with IQMH guidelines.
  • Assisting in the instruction of students and new employees.
  • Performing other assigned duties within the laboratory to the extent allowed by pertinent legislation of regulatory bodies.
  • Recording, reviewing, and reporting test results accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated team leadership and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team approach and to adhere to accepted standards of personal conduct.
  • Demonstrated evidence of high standards in all aspects of communication.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining/enhancing professional competence through participation in appropriate continuing education activities.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • General good health and a level of fitness appropriate for the demands of the position.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to participate in Quality Improvement Initiatives/Programs.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and ability to work as a member of an integrated healthcare team.
