Job Summary

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Indigenous Child and Youth Support Specialist to join our team. This is a temporary position, 12 months, with the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver culturally relevant and responsive programming to support the learning, achievement, and well-being of self-identified First Nation, Inuit, and/or Métis students.
  • Collaborate with the Indigenous Education Lead, community members, school administrators, and teachers to develop and implement student plans.
  • Provide support to students using traditional and cultural approaches to teaching, learning, and spirituality.
  • Work with students who require social/emotional and/or behavioral support, providing small group or individual support as needed.
  • Develop and deliver professional development sessions on topics such as Applied Behaviour Analysis, Zones of Regulation, and Tools for Life.
  • Participate in the Indigenous Education Community Circle and liaise with community organizations to support Indigenous students and their families.
  • Collect data and develop intervention plans to support student success.
  • Collaborate with school teams to recommend intervention and behavior management strategies.
Requirements
  • Child and Youth Worker diploma or degree from a recognized institution.
  • Eligibility for membership in the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with lived experiences as First Nation, Inuit, or Métis, and a minimum of three years of experience as a Child and Youth Worker in an educational setting.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the developmental needs of Indigenous children/youth.
  • Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) certified or willingness to be trained.
  • ABA training from a recognized institution.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work professionally as a member of a Catholic professional learning community.
