Job Summary

We are seeking an exceptional emerging researcher to fill the position of Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Language Revitalization at Vancouver Island University (VIU). This esteemed role offers a unique opportunity to build a research program that supports Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action 13-17 addressing language and culture.

The successful candidate will be an emerging world-class researcher with a demonstrated interest in issues relating to Indigenous language revitalization. They will have a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications, external research funding, and community engagement. The Chair will participate in academic programs, including teaching undergraduate or graduate courses, and contribute to the development of new areas of collaborative research.

About the Position

This is a full-time tenure-track faculty position with 75% dedicated to research and 25% towards teaching. The successful candidate will join the Faculty of Social Sciences at VIU and become a core member of the university's research community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, collaborative research, and community consultation in the area of Indigenous language revitalization.
  • Develop and lead a research program focused on Indigenous language revitalization, with a potential for developing new areas of collaborative research.
  • Teach undergraduate or graduate courses and contribute to the academic programs of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
  • Provide leadership for research and scholarly activity, as well as attract and mentor research trainees at all levels.

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
  • An exceptional track record of research creativity, productivity, and impact in the field of Indigenous language revitalization.
  • Demonstrated potential for international recognition in the short term.
  • An original and innovative research program of high quality.
