Position Overview

We are thrilled to expand our team and are currently seeking a dedicated individual for the permanent, full-time role of Underwriter I – III (Personal Lines). This position reports directly to the Supervisor of Underwriting and involves a variety of responsibilities related to assessing and processing insurance applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate applications, renewals, and modifications to existing policies to assess risk levels. Conduct research to gather additional information as necessary.
  • Make informed decisions regarding risk acceptance, including potential restrictions or declines, in accordance with established authority limits.
  • Identify actions to mitigate risk and suggest necessary adjustments to coverage, deductibles, or premiums based on thorough analysis.
  • Determine appropriate pricing, apply relevant discounts and surcharges, and calculate premiums accurately.
  • Handle the processing of new applications, renewals, revisions, cancellations, and quotes efficiently.
  • Respond to inquiries both verbally and in writing, serving as a knowledgeable resource for brokers, clients, and colleagues regarding policy details and underwriting criteria.
  • Draft correspondence to solicit information and clarify underwriting standards and decisions.
  • Provide training and support to administrative staff as needed.
  • Conduct quality control assessments to ensure accuracy in underwriting processes.
  • Verify the integrity of information systems, including necessary updates.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the underwriting team.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 education.
  • Successful completion of at least one course from the Insurance Institute, with a commitment to pursuing the CIP designation by completing two courses annually.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant experience in the insurance field.
  • Familiarity with policy rating and underwriting practices.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lead, inspire, and train team members.
  • Proficient in building and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Skilled in interacting with the public and brokers in a professional and courteous manner.
