About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Court Officer (Judicial Support) to join our team at The Government of Nova Scotia. As a key member of our Court Services Division, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our courts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and manage court hearings held at all levels of court, providing support to the Judiciary and liaising with law enforcement agencies, the legal profession, and the public.
  • Act as the clerk of the court in all courts, including jury sittings, and perform quasi-judicial duties as a Staff Justice of the Peace.
  • Provide confidential administrative and organizational support to the Judiciary, including drafting and preparing complex orders and decisions arising from court hearings.
  • Train and mentor new staff in day-to-day operational activities.
  • Record and transcribe court proceedings using electronic recording equipment.
  • Facilitate all aspects of court hearings, including opening court, calling cases, swearing or affirming witnesses or interpreters and translators, and operating technology required to support virtual court or hybrid models of court or appearances.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Two years of post-secondary education in a related discipline, plus five years of related experience in a legal environment.
  • Excellent keyboarding, data entry, transcribing, and computer application skills, including MS Office products.
  • Experience with virtual platforms such as MS Teams and video conferencing.
  • Superior organizational abilities, strong prioritization skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly listening skills, when dealing with difficult people in complex, sensitive, and stressful situations.
  • A high level of initiative and problem-solving abilities, with a willingness to accept responsibilities.
