Job Summary:

The Director of Transportation will oversee the safe and efficient operation of the transportation department, ensuring the well-being of students and staff. This role requires strong leadership and management skills, as well as the ability to direct and manage operations of a large fleet of vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sustain and evaluate the transportation program, preparing and updating bus routes and schedules as needed.
  • Coordinate transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs, responding to emergency calls after hours.
  • Direct repair of all district-owned vehicles, overseeing plans for preventive maintenance and ensuring buses are delivered to drivers when breakdowns occur.
  • Compile budgets and cost estimates based upon documented program needs, administering the transportation budget and ensuring programs are cost-effective.
  • Initiate purchases and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies, maintaining current inventory of supplies and parts to avoid ordering delays.
  • Approve and submit invoices to the business office for payment, recommending disposal of obsolete or worn vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepare data necessary to process transportation payroll, acting in an ethical and honest manner in all business transactions of the district.
  • Comply with all policies & procedures; internal controls; and state, local, and federal laws as they pertain to the financial affairs of the district.
  • Promptly report to the immediate supervisor or Superintendent any suspected violations of the code of ethics, such as theft, fraud, or any other dishonest act in the workplace.
  • Implement federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in transportation area, compiling, maintaining, and presenting physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Implement student discipline policies and communicate expected behavior to students, reviewing student behavior reports and conducting conferences with parents, students, and drivers.
  • Enforce student discipline and suspension of riding privileges for students who violate rules and regulations, recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating all transportation personnel.
  • Assign bus drivers to routes and assign substitutes as needed, preparing, processing, and maintaining documents required for safety certification and alcohol/drug testing of staff.
  • Evaluate employee job performance to ensure effectiveness, enforcing safety standards that conform to state, federal, and insurance regulations and developing a program of preventive safety.
  • Advise administration of inclement weather that may result in road hazards or closing school, assisting in gathering information in investigations of school bus accidents and student safety violations.
  • Assist in organizing and conducting training programs to promote a safe work environment, ensuring that transportation equipment is in excellent operating condition.
  • Perform disaster duty as needed (hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, etc.), developing training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operations of the department.
  • Attend and make presentations at board meetings and conferences, attending professional growth activities to keep informed of innovative techniques in transportation.
  • Maintain familiarity with the district's initiatives to better serve the needs of students, notifying bus drivers, schools, and the public of changes in bus routes, schedules, and processes.
  • Maintain a positive and effective rapport with staff, parents and the community, supervising and evaluating the performance of transportation manager, service manager, and secretary.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferred
  • Certification through Texas Association for Pupil Transportation or Certification through Texas Association of School Business Officials
  • Three years supervisory experience in transportation operations preferably in public education; five years bus driver experience

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office setting with frequent district wide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; exposure to hazards, chemicals, machinery, and extreme temperatures
