The Opportunity: Education Assistant for the Visually Impaired

At School District #39 (Vancouver), we are committed to providing exceptional learning experiences for students. As a large, urban school district, we serve one of Canada's most diverse student populations, and equity and inclusivity are at the forefront of our approach to education.

We are seeking an Education Assistant to support students with visual impairments in our schools. In this role, you will work under the direction of a senior member of the team to develop and implement individual programs and contracts for students who require additional support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and maintain records of student progress, discussing changes with team members as needed
  • Organize and participate in field trips, sports, social, recreational, and craft activities
  • Support students in community-based programming, such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outings
  • Provide support to students with social and emotional problems
  • Supervise students, as required, and address disciplinary issues as they arise
  • Prepare instructional aid materials, set up and operate instructional aid equipment, and scan and convert documents into e-text
  • Create tactile materials and adapt curriculum as needed
  • Provide school and student support as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 and successful completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field, with over two months of experience
  • Experience supporting students with visual impairments and knowledge of the basic principles of Unified English Braille code is preferred
  • Formal training in childcare/child development, behavior management, and/or social sciences
  • Related experience working with students who are mentally/emotionally and/or physically challenged
  • Sound knowledge of educational/developmental psychology and behavior management
  • Ability to effectively assist educators in behavior management, individual skill development, and the integration process
  • Ability to provide personal assistance to meet students' requirements
  • Ability to lift and position students of varying weights
  • Knowledge of braille software and experience using an iPad with VoiceOver and Brailliant is an asset

Compensation:

The salary for this position is $32.62/hour (6.5 hours/day) plus 20% in lieu of all benefits and statutory holidays (or 14% if contributing to an existing municipal pension plan). Working months are September to June each year.
