Executive Director Opportunity

The Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division (CMHA NS) is seeking a visionary Executive Director to lead the organization into a new chapter of growth and innovation. As a key player in a national network, CMHA NS focuses on advocacy, high-quality program delivery, and influencing public policy to improve mental health services.

The ideal candidate will have a strong ability to drive organizational development and sustainability, managing CMHA NS, ensuring a psychologically safe and positive culture, engaging with government and stakeholders to influence public policy, and overseeing the organization's financial health.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Programs & Services:
    • Develop, implement, and continuously improve programs and services, ensuring alignment with CMHA NS's strategy and vision.
    • Provide guidance on emerging issues, manage operational changes, and evaluate program effectiveness.
    • Support policy development and capacity building.
  2. Financial & Fund Management:
    • Oversee budgets exceeding $1 million, ensuring effective allocation and financial compliance.
    • Develop and implement funding strategies, manage grant applications, and resolve financial challenges.
  3. Association Management:
    • Manage day-to-day operations, including staff, office services, and facilities.
    • Support provincial and national CMHA initiatives, maintain brand integrity, and ensure a strong social media presence.
    • Act as a spokesperson and build sustainability within the organization.
  4. Leadership:
    • Set performance targets, promote a healthy workplace, and lead staff development.
    • Communicate organizational goals and values, support succession planning, and foster internal collaboration.
  5. Collaboration & Relationship Building:
    • Influence mental health policy and planning, build strategic partnerships, and act as a liaison between CMHA NS, its branches, and CMHA National.
    • Engage with community and government to support mental health awareness and community engagement.
  6. Governance:
    • Provide operational support to the Board, assist with board recruitment and policy development, and ensure alignment with the strategic plan.
    • Keep the board informed and ensure effective communication and execution of board decisions.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in social services, psychology, nonprofit management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in a senior leadership role within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven track record of strategic leadership, organizational change management, and operational excellence.
  • Experience in mental health or related fields is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of governance relations and the ability to collaborate effectively with a Board of Directors.
  • Excellent communication, fundraising, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in navigating funding complexities and implementing financial sustainability strategies.
  • Ability to balance strategic vision with day-to-day operations and make difficult decisions when necessary.
