Job Title: R&D Manager

Victoria Newitt Recruitment Inc has been retained by our natural, sustainable food client to search for a Research and Development Manager.

Job Summary:

The R&D Manager will be responsible for working with cross-functional teams to innovate and develop new and existing products and processes across our client's range that support strategic objectives and growth. This position will lead Innovation, Improvement, Regulatory, and Quality improvements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan, prioritize, and deliver a portfolio of product innovation and renovation projects to support overall company strategy and growth.
  • Execute product and/or process development projects to ensure business objectives are delivered on target cost.
  • Work with other functional departments to identify, evaluate, and prioritize product development projects and opportunities.
  • Build effective processes and relationships to be an effective Innovation and Development team.
  • Conduct and develop prototypes from laboratory to evaluation in production.
  • Perform ongoing sensory evaluation and shelf life study on new and existing products.
  • Help develop and assist with improvement programs to ensure we continuously strive to improve our product quality and design, and manufacturing processes.
  • Exhibit innovation in discovery, advancement, evaluation, and implementation of new proprietary technologies, products, and processes to meet company strategic goals.
  • Develop and review cost reduction strategies on new and existing products.
  • Conduct competitive benchmarking, technology reviews, and intellectual property searches.
  • Develop and implement cost reduction strategies on new and existing products.
  • Assist management in establishing critical design parameters for product, functional claims, ingredient strategies, stability systems, process development, and packaging format.
  • Understand current CFIA/FDA labelling regulations. Notify management of any changes or issues.
  • Work with government bodies such as CFIA and other health professionals as required.
  • Understand Organic regulations and Non-GMO requirements and maintain certificates and fill for new applications.
  • Prepare yearly SRED and other reports as needed.
  • Actively participate and collaborate with other departments (operations, marketing, regulatory, finance, sales) to advance product development initiatives and achieve desired business results.
  • This position requires some level of travel and schedule flexibility.
Qualifications:
  • Master's Food Science degree or a Food Technology diploma required.
  • 7+ years' experience in research and development, with a focus on product development.
  • Strong ability to plan, develop, and implement team-based systems.
  • Strong industrial research and analytical skills.
  • Experience building relationships and working with external partners, including suppliers and co-packers.
  • Strong understanding of trends, food science, ingredient functionality, product development, experimental design, process technology, and commercialization, across at least two product categories.
  • Organized, flexible, quick thinker with a pro-active attitude.
  • Knowledge of food safety, GMP, HACCP, and work safety practices.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Food Safety regulations and standards.
  • Knowledge of Organic, Non-GMO, and Kosher certification standards and requirements.
  • Advanced computer skills including MS Excel and Word.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, drive for alignment and decisions, and contribute disruptive ideas.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel.
