Position Title: Research Scientist in Wildfire Analytics

Position Overview:

The Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society is seeking a dedicated researcher to engage in the development and application of statistical techniques aimed at forecasting the incidence of significant wildfires across Canada. This role involves collaboration with experts in fire science and statistics, contributing to a multidisciplinary initiative focused on daily fire occurrence and burn probability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement statistical methodologies for predicting severe wildfire events.
  • Assess model predictions against historical data to validate accuracy and identify potential model shortcomings.
  • Prepare and present both oral and written reports detailing research findings.
  • Collaborate effectively within a diverse team environment.

Essential Qualifications:

  • PhD in statistics, data science, environmental science, or a related discipline, completed within the last three years.
  • Demonstrated experience in research planning and execution.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a team of researchers and support personnel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with programming languages such as R and/or Python, including frameworks like tidyverse and data visualization tools.
  • Experience in managing large datasets and performing efficient computations.
  • Knowledge in areas such as categorical data analysis, generalized additive models, statistical learning, spatial statistics, and machine learning.
  • Background in environmental, forestry, or atmospheric sciences.
