Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Criminal and Family Law Attorney to join our team at the Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission. As a Staff Lawyer, you will be responsible for conducting assigned files to professional standards and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Commission and the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct of Assigned Files: Conduct assigned files to professional standards and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Commission and the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
- Preliminary Inquiries and Pre-Trials: Conduct preliminary inquiries, pre-trials, case conferences, trials, reviews, and appeals.
- Negotiation of Competent Resolutions: Negotiate competent resolutions of files to achieve fair, early, and lasting outcomes for clients.
- Representation at Bail Hearings and Guilty Pleas: Represent clients at bail hearings, guilty pleas, and remands both in-person and remotely.
- Independent Case Work: Work independently on cases as assigned by the Legal Director.
- Time Entry and Record Keeping: Complete and accurate time entry and record keeping.
Position Requirements:
- Experience in Criminal Law: Experience in criminal law.
- Experience in Family Law: Experience in family law.
- Law Degree: Law degree from a recognized law school.
- Law Society Membership: Member in good standing with the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
- Driver's License: Valid Driver's License – Class 5.
- Technological Skills: Technologically savvy with a keen enthusiasm for learning new systems, including computer literacy in MS Office, web-based legal research tools, and other web-based resources.
- Commitment to Social Justice: Commitment to social justice and an understanding of the needs and challenges faced by low-income and marginalized communities.
- Time Management: Demonstrated time management and ability to deal with conflicting priorities and deadlines.
- Criminal Record Check: Successful candidate will be required to provide an acceptable criminal record check.
